My Own Building System (a.k.a. mobs) is a GPLd build system, lightweight and easy to use, with a limited application framework. more>>
My Own Building System (a.k.a. mobs) is a GPLd build system, lightweight and easy to use, with a limited application framework. My Own Building System project gets information from the end-user wanting to build your project and modifies the building process according to such information.
It provides the developer with some development helpers, including some makefile framework and an interface for the end-user (the 0 script). This building system supports the (more or less) automatic building of C, C++, Bison/Yacc, Flex/Lex, and Texinfo source files, and the creation of static and shared libraries and binaries.
It is not a GNU autoconf/automake clone, and although the command line of the 0 script certainly mimics the one of GNU configure it is only for the sake of end-users. Internally, and from the point of view of the developer, is very different.

Web Ping 0.1
Web Ping is a program for testing your internet connection. more>>
Web Ping is a program for testing your internet connection.
Web Ping is a simple application to test an internet connection to a perticular site. I created this application after my work moved locations and half our network stayed in the old building and the other half moved with us to the new location.
A flaky (significant point) VPN was set up to keep the two connected. Since a couple of the unmoved servers were of interest to me, I keeped checking to see if they were still accessable with the ping command before doing any serious work with them.
A quick and pathetic Google resulted in no other program that meet my needes, so I wrote one.
Insted of doing an actual network ping, Web Ping tests a connection by downloading a web page on a given server. The size of the page and time are stored in memory and the times are graphed. In this way, sites that block network a ping can still be tracked.
Web Ping also keeps track of the largest and smallest download times per session and also tracks the max and min values currently on the graph. Times of interest are graphed in a color which represents if it is a max or a min. (see figure one). The history tab also lists all the max values as they have been recevied.
A running average is also calculated with each download. The files downloaded are not processed or stored in any way. This prevents any security problems that can normaly happen in a web browser enviroment. The only two pecies of information retained about a downloaded file is the size and time.
Usage:
There are two ways to use Web Ping, GUI or CLI mode. The simplest of the two modes is CLI. Web Ping can be started in CLI mode by passing a url to the jar file in a command line interface like this: "java -jar WebPing.jar http://localhost". Web Ping will automaticly start getting statistics on the requested url, printing results to the screnn.
To quite, press q and then then ENTER key. CLI allows the user to Most people will probably want to use the GUI mode which has a history graph and allows the user to start and stop the session.
The best way to run Web Ping is in GUI mode. GUI mode allows the user start and stop the ping process at will and to change the site that is pinged. Users can also see more information about about the history of the pings and view max values and min values easily. There are three tabs on the top of the page, the first is the application, second is the history list, and the last give information about the application.

Porcupine 0.1
Porcupine is a web application server that provides an object oriented framework for developing web applications rapidly. more>>
Porcupine is a web application server that provides an object oriented framework for developing web applications rapidly.
Many of the tasks required for building web applications as you know them, are either eliminated or simplified. For instance, when developing a Porcupine application you dont have to design a relational database. You only have to design and implement your business objects as classes, using the building blocks provided by the framework (datatypes). Porcupine integrates a native object database, no mapping required.
Another tedious task for web applications is the interface design, and the constraints imposed by HTML. QuiX, the servers integrated XUL motor, simplifies the interface design process. All you have to do is describe your applications interface in XML and write the appropriate event handlers. You dont have to waste time and money on widget implementations. QuiX comes with a variety of ready to use widgets, accelerating the development process.
Generally, every Porcupine application consists of three distinct layers. The first is the business layer consisting of the business objects which encapsulate the business logic.
The second layer binds the HTTP protocol with the first layers business objects. This layer is implemented using Python Server Pages or Servlets. If using XML-RPC, one common approach is to directly map an XML-RPC method to a business objects method.
The third layer, the presentation layer, usually consists of XML UI definitions and JavaScript event handlers.
The first two layers are executed server side and the third layer is executed on the client (browser).

ZenWeb 2.17.0
ZenWeb is a system for building entire Web sites, not just pages. more>>
ZenWeb is a system for building entire websites, not just pages. It allows you to focus on the content and the structure of the website, while leaving page construction, markup, layout, navigation as secondary concerns.
ZenWeb provides tools for complete website design and creation, simple paragraph to HTML generation with embellishments, and a rich set of tools for page and website creation, modification, and customization.
ZenWeb extends traditional web tools by being site oriented instead of page oriented. This allows you to focus on the quality and consistancy of the whole system instead of only being able to focus on a page at a time.
It is based around a sitemap. This sitemap defines the structure of your site and allows you to focus on the whole website in a single view. Pages know their relationships to others (children, parents, siblings) as a consequence and all navigation tools are automatically created by ZenWeb.
Installation
Unpack the package. Youve probably already done this.
Test your ruby installation. Run irb:
- At the prompt type "1+1" and make sure it outputs "2".
- That states that, yes, you installed ruby correctly.
Run make test.
- If all is well, you should have zero errors listed after running all of the tests.
- If not, email support. I respond quickly to problems.
Run make docs.
- A new directory docshtml should now exist.
View docshtml in your browser.
- If you have apache you can quickly serve these pages (on unix):
+ Run make apache
+ a private httpd will fire up running on port 8080.
- Otherwise, open the file directly in your browser
- Read all the pages, but start with Your Own Website.

Bigtop::Docs::Tutorial is a simple case study of building a web app with bigtop. more>>
Bigtop::Docs::Tutorial is a simple case study of building a web app with bigtop.
Note on What to Read
This document explains how to build an app of moderate complexity by typing in a bigtop file. Since it was written, tentmaker has come along. It is a browser delivered editor for bigtop files, see Bigtop::Docs::TentTut for details.
If you need a simpler example than the one shown here, consider the one table address book example in Gantry::Docs::Tutorial.
Driving Idea
Many (not all) applications are mostly data managers. That is, they are really intermediaries between users and various tables in a database. A bigtop file is meant to be a single place to describe all (or practically all) facits of the data in an application. This includes at least:
The name and special features of each controller.
- The name of each table in the database.
- A description of each column (field) in each table in the database. This includes at least:
its name and SQL type
- the label the user sees for it when it appears on the screen
- what type of html form element the user uses to enter or update it
- how the data is validated and filtered on its way into and out of the database (filtering not yet supported)
- which table the field refers to if it is a foreign key
- etc.
All of these things, and more, are described in a Bigtop file. That file can be given to bigtop to build the application. Once it is built, it can be safely rebuilt so that only the generated bits are changed (this is accomplished by maintaining a clean separation between generated and hand edited files, and by config options in the bigtop file).
Notice that nothing in the above has committed you or me to any particular web application framework, data modeling scheme, templating system, or web server. Bigtop is neutral (think big tent), at least for Perl apps delivered via the web.
