BuddySpace PRO 2.6

BuddySpace PRO 2.6

BuddySpace is an enhanced Jabber client providing secure presence management, web services and instant messaging. more>>
BuddySpace is an instant messenger with four novel twists: (1) it allows optional maps for geographical & office-plan visualizations in addition to standard buddy lists; (2) it is built on open source Jabber, which makes it interoperable with ICQ, MSN, Yahoo and others; (3) it is implemented in Java, so it is cross-platform; (4) it is built by a UK research lab, so it is 100% free with full sources readiily available. But BuddySpace is about more than just messaging, as we explain below.

One of the key factors that led to the widespread popularity of Instant Messaging applications from 1997 onwards (including ICQ, AOL, Yahoo!, MSN, Odigo, and Jabber messengers) was the concept of pushed presence: the automatic notification of the appearance of friends and colleagues online.

However, Instant Messaging (IM) is just one of many possible presence-related and presence-dependent applications. For example, presence-enabled applications can facilitate safety-tracking of children by mobile phone, support for emergency services, blind-date radar, group teleconference management, multiplayer games, and anything involving the collaboration of individuals separated in space and time.

Why phone a contact only to receive an engaged tone or pre-recorded message, when the telephone network already knows what state your contact is in, and could indicate this directly on your contact list? All of these concepts embody varying degrees of what we refer to as enhanced presence management.

The concept of presence has matured in recent years to move away from the simple notion of online/offline/away, towards a rich blend of attributes that can be used to characterise an individuals physical and/or spatial location, work trajectory, time frame of reference, mental mood, goals, and even intentions! Our challenge is how best to characterise presence, how to make it easy to manage and easy to visualise, and how to remain consistent with the users own expectations, work habits, and existing patterns of Instant Messaging and other communication tool usage.

BuddySpace generalizes the concept of Buddy List (popularised by Instant Messaging tools such as AOL Instant Messenger, ICQ, MSN Messenger, and Yahoo Messenger) to provide multiple views of collaborative workgroups according to users needs and tastes. Our aim has been to provide a personal dashboard or radar screen so that one can observe the availability and interaction state of colleagues worldwide in a manner that exhibits the following desirable properties:

* immediate: real-time updates need to be pushed instantly to users rather than pulled in by request -- the push approach helps keep updates more palpable and informative
* peripheral and therefore non-intrusive: users lead busy lives, and dislike being bombarded with yet more information, so we aim to keep awareness of colleagues available in a compact manner that can be noticed peripherally
* customisable: some people prefer simple or hierarchical lists, some prefer visual maps, some prefer status lights, and so on; some prefer a Windows look-and-feel, some a Mac-- we need to cater for diverse user preferences and capabilities
* scaleable: we have to provide ways to indicate the presence of potentially enormous numbers of people, even given that these numbers will be filtered down for personal use -- researchers inhabit workspaces with many hundreds of colleagues around the globe; the Open University has well over 150,000 students online; large peer-spaces like music swapping communities have many millions of users connected simultaneously
* interoperable: with several hundred million users of the Big Four (AIM/ICQ/MSN/Yahoo!), it is crucial that any approach allow interopebility with systems to which our users already subscribe; this is one of the many reasons we built BuddySpace entirely on top of Jabber (www.jabber.org), which provides gateways to the Big Four products.
* cross-platform: we need to service a community not only on Windows, Unix/Linux, and Mac desktop and notebook configurations, but also on PDAs and mobile phones -- we therefore develop entirely in Java
* XML-literate: for future intelligent applications, communication transport needs to be about more than just string-transmission; another we adopted Jabber is that it is based entirely on a generic XML transport architecture, ideally suited for this purpose.
* open source: for the research community to join us and to gain leverage via our research output, we have ensured that BuddySpace is open source, available on SourceForge.
* clean: BuddySpace adheres rigorously to the Jabber specification, which means that it interoperates with other Jabber clients and servers without danger of the rogue behaviour that non-standard implementations inadvertently allow (e.g. the semantics of users inhabiting multiple groups is undefined in some clients, and can cause crashes).
* extendable: BuddySpace deploys a plug-in architecture which means that additions, such as new visualizations, and new concepts such as gaming interfaces, are readily achievable

BuddySpace fulfills all the above criteria, and provides a compelling user interface that can be highly compact, yet provide users with an important feel-good factor, akin to seeing nearby office lights turned on when entering ones office building at night. By studying the semantics of presence, we can also augment the existing impoverished presence states in a principles manner, providing capabilities that are more representative of the way real users work. Forthcoming capabilities will include automatic location updates via mobile devices, and the use of semantic matchmaking via intelligent profile handling, in order to help users quickly find and filter colleagues of particular interest.

spamdyke 2.6.3

spamdyke 2.6.3

spamdyke is a drop-in filter for qmail to provide connection-time blacklisting, graylisting, DNS RBL checking, improved logging. more>>
spamdyke is a drop-in filter for qmail to provide connection-time blacklisting, graylisting, DNS RBL checking, improved logging, and more spamdyke project is a standalone program that does not use qmail source code or require patching/recompiling qmail.
For anyone who runs a mail server, spam is a problem. Its a huge problem and its only getting bigger. Unfortunately, qmail doesnt have many facilities for dealing with spam. qmail also doesnt do good logging. The qmail logs are probably useful to qmail developers but not to system administrators. Consider:
- Qmail doesnt log with a human-readable time format.
- Qmail logs dont track usable information (like senders and recipients).
- Qmail doesnt log to a single log file, making it very difficult to track an email from connection to delivery.
- Qmail logs roll over after a set size is reached (could be a few hours, could be a few minutes).
All of these things makes qmail very difficult to troubleshoot or monitor. spamdyke solves this. It monitors incoming traffic, acting as a middleman between qmail and the remote server. It catches the sender and recipient addresses as they go by and logs them to syslog. If it sees something it doesnt like (e.g. a blacklisted sender), it cuts the connection, closes qmail and fakes the rest of the SMTP transaction with the remote server. qmail thinks the remote server disconnected normally. The remote server thinks qmail is rejecting the message. Its the best of both worlds.
Some history: DJBs ucspi-tools package includes a handy little program called rblsmtpd for checking incoming SMTP connections against a DNSRBL. Initially, this seemed like a great thing (and it was) but it didnt go far enough. Lots of spam still came through. So after extending rblsmtpd to do more and more and more things, a limit was finally reached where it wouldnt go any further. Thus, spamdyke was born.
Main features:
- Reject the connection if the remote server has no reverse DNS entry.
- Reject the connection if the remote servers reverse DNS entry does not resolve.
- Reject the connection if the remote servers reverse DNS entry contains its IP address and a prohibited keyword (like "dynamic").
- Reject the connection if the remote servers reverse DNS entry contains its IP address and ends in a country code (whats the japanese word for "dynamic"?).
- Reject the connection if the remote servers IP address is listed in an IP blacklist.
- Reject the connection if the remote servers reverse DNS entry is listed in a domain name blacklist.
- Reject the connection if the remote servers IP address is listed in a given DNS realtime blacklist.
- Reject the connection if the remote server sends data before the SMTP greeting banner is displayed (earlytalkers).
- Reject the connection if the senders address is listed in a sender blacklist file.
- Limit recipients to a maximum number per connection. (Yes, this goes against RFC 821 but legitimate mail servers retry the rejected recipients, spammers dont.)
- Graylist incoming mail to specific domains (some domains can enjoy graylisting while others do not).
- Close the connection after a set idle time.
- Close the connection after a set maximum time.
Those filters end up rejecting more than 99.9% of the incoming connections to my mail server. As a result, I receive (on average) less than one spam message PER WEEK! (Down from a high of 70+ per day.) Regular correspondance with real people has not suffered.
Graylisting deserves special mention. As of 2007, its not widely used (and therefore still effective against spammers). Heres how it works:
An incoming connection is received and the sender and recipient are identified.
A log is consulted to see if the sender has sent email to the recipient before. If so, the message is accepted. If not, the message is rejected with a temporary rejection code and a log entry is made.
When the remote mail server retries the message (usually only a few minutes later), the previously-logged connection is noted and the message is accepted.
Simple, right? After the system is activated, regular correspondents first email is delayed a few minutes. After that, there are no delays. But the spam stops because most spammers dont retry their deliveries! Even when they do, they usually change their sender address to a new (fake) one, which gets graylisted.
Graylisting is amazing and makes a tremendous difference (for now). spamdyke will also:
- Bypass all filters if the remote servers IP address is listed in an IP whitelist file.
- Bypass all filters if the remote servers reverse DNS entry is listed in a domain name whitelist file.
- Log meaningful messages to the syslog (very unlike qmails logs).
- Log all SMTP traffic to aid diagnosing problems.
Enhancements:
- This release fixes a serious bug that was causing lost mail when the remote server sent the message and disconnected in a burst without waiting for a response.
- Code has been added to translate bare line feeds into carriage return+line feeds.
- Support has been added for MUAs that send their username with their AUTH LOGIN command.

fakechroot 2.6

fakechroot 2.6

fakechroot provides a fake chroot environment to programs. more>>
fakechroot project provides a fake chroot environment to programs. A fake chroot allows you to run programs which require root privileges on an unprivileged user account.
For example, you can create a Debian bootstrap or a development environment and build packages inside a chrooted system using a standard non-root user account.
You can then use the apt-get command to install other packages without root privileges.
Enhancements:
- This release includes a new environment variable FAKECHROOT_EXCLUDE_PATH and fixes for the getcwd(3), readlink(2), and mktemp(3) functions.
- The chroot(2) function is now recursive and allows nested chroots.

XPixMap 2.6

XPixMap 2.6

XPixMap consists of an ASCII image format and a C library. more>>
XPixMap consists of an ASCII image format and a C library. The format defines how to store color images (X Pixmap) in a portable and powerful way.
While XPM is not an X Consortium standard, it is already a de facto standard. It is used in many applications both commercial and non-commercial. Several vendors distribute the XPM library, as contributed software, on the platforms they sell. Moreover, the Common Desktop Environment specifies that icons must be stored either in XBM or XPM format. Finally, Motif 2.0 from OSF includes the XPM library, allowing XPM to be used in addition to XBM.
XPM has nothing to do with dates in any form and is not influenced by them. The XPM library is therefore Y2K compliant.
To obtain the XPM library, first uncompress and untar the compressed tar file in an appropriate directory. Then you can either compile XPM via "imake" or in a stand-alone way.

bonddb 2.2.6

bonddb 2.2.6

bonddb is a data abstration layer for SQL. more>>
Bonddb is a object oriented wrapper for postgresql SQL. bonddb project is a fast data abstraction layer written in C for C/C++ applications to allow easy access to class objects.
Bonddb is not a stand alone object orientated database, but works on top of SQL so you still get a solid proven backend with the benefits of things like prescient objects.
At the moment only postgresql is supported, though we are working with gnome-db to support a more complete range of databases.
One of the real advantages of bonddb is how easy it is to modify rows in database fields without you having to construct sql statements or worry about refreshing existing datasets. It also lets you easy map your tables together in object to object relationships.
Method calls arent supported yet but they are on the way. Direct binding into individual langauges is still been worked on.
Installation and Requierments:
In order to install bonddb you need the postgresql client development libraries installed, specifically libpq-fe.
Postgresql 7.0 or higher is required, as bonddb uses functions specific to this version. Also glib development libaries 1.2 or higher is needed.
For bonddb 0.3.0 and higher you will need bison, Ive come across some problems under older versions of bison and I recommend you have version 1.3 or higher installed.
Enhancements:
- Bugs concerning saving records and jumpto searches were fixed.
- Problems with using PostgreSQL 8.2 and OIDs were fixed.
- Improvements were made for the build process for Windows.

DenyHosts 2.6

DenyHosts 2.6

DenyHosts is a script intended to be run by Linux system administrators to help thwart ssh server attacks. more>>
DenyHosts is a script intended to be run by Linux system administrators to help thwart ssh server attacks.
If youve ever looked at your ssh log (/var/log/secure on Redhat, /var/log/auth.log on Mandrake, etc...) you may be alarmed to see how many hackers attempted to gain access to your server. Hopefully, none of them were successful (but then again, how would you know?). Wouldnt it be better to automatically prevent that attacker from continuing to gain entry into your system?
DenyHosts attempts to address the above... and more.
Main features:
- Parses /var/log/secure to find all login attempts and filters failed and successful attempts.
- Can be run from the command line, cron or as a daemon (new in 0.9)
- Records all failed login attempts for the user and offending host
- For each host that exceeds a threshold count, records the evil host
- Keeps track of each non-existent user (eg. sdadasd) when a login attempt failed.
- Keeps track of each existing user (eg. root) when a login attempt failed.
- Keeps track of each offending host (with 0.8+ these hosts can be purged if the associated entry in /etc/hosts.deny is expired)
- Keeps track of suspicious logins (that is, logins that were successful for a host that had many login failures)
- Keeps track of the file offset, so that you can reparse the same file (/var/log/secure) continuously (until it is rotated).
- When the log file is rotated, the script will detect it and parse from the beginning.
- Appends /etc/hosts.deny and adds the newly banned hosts
- Optionally sends an email of newly banned hosts and suspicious logins.
- Keeps a history of all user, host, user/host combo and suspicious logins encountered which includes the data and number of corresponding failed login attempts.
- Maintains failed valid and invalid user login attempts in separate files, such that it is easy to see which valid user is under attack (which would give you the opportunity to remove the account, change the password or change its default shell to something like /sbin/nologin
- Upon each run, the script will load the previously saved data and re-use it to append new failures.
- Resolves IP addresses to hostnames, if available (new in v0.6.0).
- /etc/hosts.deny entries can be expired (purge) at a user specified time (new in 0.8)
- FreeBSD support (added in 0.7)

fntsample is a program for making font samples that show Unicode coverage of the font.
The samples are similar in appearance to Unicode charts. Samples can be saved as PDF or PostScript files.
Installation:
The simplest way to compile this package is:
1. `cd to the directory containing the packages source code and type `./configure to configure the package for your system. If youre using `csh on an old version of System V, you might need to type `sh ./configure instead to prevent `csh from trying to execute `configure itself.
Running `configure takes awhile. While running, it prints some messages telling which features it is checking for.
2. Type `make to compile the package.
3. Optionally, type `make check to run any self-tests that come with the package.
4. Type `make install to install the programs and any data files and documentation.
5. You can remove the program binaries and object files from the source code directory by typing `make clean. To also remove the files that `configure created (so you can compile the package for a different kind of computer), type `make distclean. There is also a `make maintainer-clean target, but that is intended mainly for the packages developers. If you use it, you may have to get all sorts of other programs in order to regenerate files that came with the distribution.
Enhancements:
- This release makes it possible to change the default font styles and sizes for headers and numbers displayed on font samples.
