boottool 1.2
boottool and Linux::Bootloader provide a generic interface for detecting the installed bootloader. more>>
boottool and Linux::Bootloader provide a generic interface for detecting the installed bootloader, updating bootloader configuration files, and performing boot-once to a given kernel.
Supported bootloaders include grub, yaboot, lilo and elilo.
There are essentially four major pieces in this package. First is Linux::Bootloader itself its subclasses for Grub, Lilo, et al. These provide functionality for modifying the bootloader config files and interacting with the bootloaders. Second is Linux::Bootloader::Detect, which is conceptually distinct in that it simply analyzes the system to see what bootloader is in use, etc.
Third is boottool, a script that taps both of these modules to provide a command line utility for modifying bootloaders in a general purpose way. Fourth are an assortment of other little helper scripts for doing related things, such as installing kernel files, determining kernel versions, and so forth.

Install Kernel 0.9.3
Install Kernel is an advanced script which installs the kernel and sets up LILO or GRUB. more>>
Install Kernel interfaces with the Linux operating system by running a series of functions or groups of commands that automate the compiling or recompiling and installation process.
Install Kernel project consists of three groups of functions: building the kernel and moving files, checking dependencies, and editing the boot loader configuration file. Grouping all of the functions in these three groups makes maintaining and altering the script much easier.
Install Kernel can also be considered a program, because a program does checking and makes choices accordingly. A script is usually a file, which contains a certain number of commands with no logic in mind. Therefore, while ik is technically a script, it can also be called a program.
Dependency checks are to make sure the current system configuration and settings are properly setup before proceeding with the kernel build. There are seven dependency checks, they are: a root check, space check, link check, boot check, boot loader check, configuration check, and a module check.
First, the root check makes sure the user is a super user; which means they are capable of editing important system files only accessible to the root account. The space check makes sure there is at least 200 megabytes available.
The kernel source these days is around 150 megabytes just for the source code. When one compiles the kernel, it may increase the size to 50 megabytes or more. Therefore, ik
checks for at least 200MB available in order to successfully compile the kernel without running out of space. Next, it is not required, but it is standard to have a symbolic link of /usr/src/linux pointing to /usr/src/linux-x.y.z.
The fourth check makes sure the user has a /boot directory, this is where the Linux kernel files will be installed to. The fifth check determines the bootloader that will be used. There are two main boot loaders in Linux. LILO and GRUB are the two most popular for booting the operating system.
This check accurately finds whether the kernel was booted from either LILO or GRUB by checking which bootloader was used last. It then tells the rest of the script to edit the correct one accordingly. The sixth configuration check is to make sure users have created a proper kernel configuration file, which is used in the process of building the Linux kernel.
The final check is a module check, if modules are turned off, the script will determine this and alter the installation process to install with no module support. The main idea behind the depdency checks is to make sure the user cannot damage his or her system if they do not do something right.
The installation process also contains seven functions. The installation process is usually several commands. However, because of the differences that can occur in a users configuration file, each part of the building process must be checked and the building process may need to be altered.
The first function makes sure the dependencies are setup correctly for all files in the kernel source tree. The second function deletes stale object files and or old kernel files. Next, the third function is the kernel build function; this function runs a command to build the Linux kernel. Next, functions four and five make and install modules if the user had specified module support in his or her kernel configuration file.
The sixth function moves the Linux kernel and its System dependency map to the boot partition. The last function of the build process sets up module dependencies for the new kernel if modules were defined. The installation process also includes a small error check for each part of the kernel build process.
If any part of the kernel build process fails; the script will abort, not modifying any boot loader configuration files. This is important; because if it did not abort, it may alter the boot loader configuration files, thus rendering the system unbootable. It is important to support every Linux configuration possible because of the wide use of this script.
The boot loader configuration and setup process is probably the most important aspect of installing a new kernel. An improper boot loader configuration may leave one with system that does not boot; or simply does not boot the new kernel.
It is also important, as some systems may have two or more boot loaders installed. There are four functions defined for this process. The first function uses the boot loader, which was defined during the configuration checks. The second function defines where the LILO or GRUB configuration files are located.
Next, depending on which boot loader is found, either LILO or GRUB configuration files are edited automatically by sed. Sed is a stream editor, which edits a file with no user intervention. If user intervention were required, the user would have to be present between certain parts of the kernel installation. With ik, it makes efficient use of a users time because only one command needs to be entered to complete the entire installation and setup process.
Install Kernel is a useful tool for those who are new to Linux, rebuild their kernel often, or value their time. It reduces the commands for installing the kernel from about thirteen to one. Users new to Linux may find this attractive.
This is because the entire process is automated; and if something is not correct, in most cases ik will notify the user what is incorrect, and how to fix the error. On the other side, for experienced users who do not wish to spend valuable time installing a new kernel, this is also very handy. Install Kernel is efficient by requiring no user intervention and reducing time spent on kernel installs, and effective by giving new to Linux the option for an easy kernel upgrade.
Enhancements:
- Updated to work with the newer version of coreutils for head and tail.
- The MAKE_JOBS directive has been removed in favor of make -j2 to prevent make from spawning hundreds of jobs if /proc/cpuinfo did not exist.

DietLinux
DietLinux is a distribution based on dietlibc. more>>
DietLinux is a distribution based on dietlibc. It contains a 2.6.x linux kernel, and will never support older kernels that do not support for devfs and tmpfs.
The boot process is optimized for small size, the upcoming 0.2-release should be able to boot from cdrom, floppy or usb-stick on all systems with at least 8mb of RAM.
General stuff
With the upcoming 0.2-release the boot-process is the same for all media. I got rid of ramdisk images for the root filesystem completely, and shrinked the initrd-images to about 60k (uncompressed). A kernel can be used with the boot system if it has support for initrd, tmpfs and devfs.
You need to configure the bootloader to give the kernel some bootparameters:
init=/linuxrc
We use linuxrc to set up some stuff. It will execle() init later
root=/dev/ram0
The initrd is the final root. Though our linuxrc will change it.
devfs=mount
Only needed if you didnt tell the kernel at compile time to automatically mount devfs
bootdevice=[]
To come, hints for linuxrc from which device we booted
Bootup, the initrd phase
linuxrc, stage 1
The first part is handled in linuxrc. Its described here short for better understanding whats going on.
* linuxrc gets started by the kernel. Besides linuxrc we have two directories in our ramdisk -- /dev with mounted devfs and /rootfs
* linuxrc mounts a tmpfs at /rootfs
* linuxrc creates basic directories in the rootfs (namely dev and initrd)
* linuxrc chdirs to /rootfs, calls pivot_root and chdirs / chroots in the new root. After this we have the old contents of the initrd under /initrd
* linuxrc remounts initrd/dev under /dev, and mounts /proc. With the dev remount weve put the open /dev/console file into the right filesystem.
* linuxrc umounts /initrd with MNT_DETACH set. Most likely initrd will not unmounted immediately but when calling execle() to exec init
For more details please consult the apkg sources.
linuxrc, stage 2
Were now getting to the second stage, still powered by initrd. Thats the first stage you can influence without modifying the linuxrc-sources.
* linuxrc creates all directories in the rootfs
* linuxrc mounts procfs and sysfs
* linuxrc inits the built-in packagesystem. This includes trying to find a (a dietlinux media must have a file called `dietlinux-media in its root) es well es the name of the initial package to load (from dietlinux-media)
* linuxrc loads the initial package (the apkg package system) and execl()s apkg with param -t (starts bootstrap). Most likely /initrd gets freed here, so we have about 60k additional space from now on.
apkg stage
Now its apkgs turn to bootstrap a package set to the rootfs.

Free60 Gentoo LiveCD Xenon is a liveCD for Linux on the Xbox 360. It is based on the experimental gentoo liveCD that can be found here:
http://gentoo.mirrors.pair.com/experimental/ppc64/livecd/
It has a few changes to boot on the Xbox 360 (codename xenon).
How does it work ?
Burn gentoo-livecd-xenon-beta-v2.iso. Upload the cdreader binary via serial, or use the new king kong patcher with built-in readcd code, this will open the dvd tray. Put the gentoo-livecd-xenon-beta CD in the drive. cdreader will automatically start the xell bootloader located at lba 0x20 on this cd and boot the Linux Kernel.
Thanks to stonersmurf for the compilation of the liveCD.

It also offers an entire 64-bit PowerPC compiler toolchain for developers.
Free60 is a project towards porting GNU/Linux, BSD, Darwin and related open-source operating systems to the Microsoft Xbox 360 video game console.
Enhancements:
- New 2.6.21 based kernel
- Improved networking support
- Improved framebuffer kernel level support
- Supports Toshiba-Samsung drives, now

It has a few changes to boot on the Xbox 360 (codename xenon).
How does it work ?
Burn gentoo-livecd-xenon-beta-v2.iso. Upload the cdreader binary via serial, or use the new king kong patcher with built-in readcd code, this will open the dvd tray. Put the gentoo-livecd-xenon-beta CD in the drive. cdreader will automatically start the xell bootloader located at lba 0x20 on this cd and boot the Linux Kernel.
Thanks to stonersmurf for the compilation of the liveCD.

Featherweight Linux 1.3
Featherweight Linux is a Live-CD installable Linux distribution that is remastered from Feather Linux. more>>
Featherweight Linux is my Live-CD installable Linux distribution that I remastered from Feather Linux, which is built on knoppix technology. Youll find some great people over at Feather and you can find some good documentation there.
Their goal is to make a light and fast Linux with a very small footprint that can be installed on USB pen drives and such. My goal is a bit different. I want a full featured Linux that isnt bloated with a kazillion gigs of crap that Ill never use. I want a small footprint that is light and fast, even on older machines, but still carries a knockout punch.
So I took Feather and stripped out a bunch of apps that I never even thought of using. I wanted to make an easy to understand desktop that was compatible and easily configurable with the latest apps being developed, so I removed all of the window managers and installed a minimal KDE 3.3 desktop.
I included the most popular internet apps like the Mozilla Suite complete with plugins, Gaim, Gftp etc... I added full printer support and wifi support. In my test environment, it automatically detects and configures both my network printer (HP PSC 1210)and my linksys wireless card. Hopefully, itll do the same for you. It is debian based so I installed Synaptic for easy upgrading and totally FREE software management. Customizing your own system with the software that you want is only a few clicks away.
In its current state, the ISO is about 240mb and the HDD install is about 700mb, which is about 1/4 of all the other overweight distros out there. Once you install it, you can install OpenOffice and a bunch of other stuff if you need it, but I just wanted to make a good solid functional base so you can build your own system if you want.
Featherweight is intended for novice users with "some" linux experience, intermediate users, and experienced linux users alike. It has a pretty straight forward install but you should know linux and HDD partitioning basics before trying to install it.

Enhancements:
- Ive upgraded e2fsprogs and e2fslibs as well as some other critical core files.
- I updated the apt sources and added abiword and acroread, as well as the acroread mozilla plugin, and I added kppp.
- I upgraded samba and switched the quick start konqueror and kde help buttons with a mozilla button and a konsole button.
- I fixed the install script where some folks were getting a blank screen after installation and added a grub install script for easy installation of grub after the initial install.
- The total installed size is now about 800mb.
<<lessTheir goal is to make a light and fast Linux with a very small footprint that can be installed on USB pen drives and such.

TINA KNOPPIX Live CD 2.0.0
TINA is an open source environment developed to accelerate the process of image analysis research. more>>
TINA is an open source environment developed to accelerate the process of image analysis research.
TINA provides functionality to assist in all areas of image analysis including handling of image, image feature and geometrical data; statistical and numerical analysis of data; GUI development as well as transmission and containment of data.
TINA also provides a range of high-level analysis techniques for both machine vision (3D object location, 2D object recognition, temporal-stereo depth estimation, etc) and medical image analysis (MR tissue segmentation, blood flow analysis, etc).
Now, thanks to the magic of KNOPPIX, you can experience TINA without installing any software. Simply place the CD into the CD drive of any PC and reboot.
Place the CD into the CD drive of any (reasonably modern) PC and reboot. The PC must be able to boot from the CD drive: if your own bootloader or windows starts up, reboot again and check your bios settings (you will probably be prompted to press DEL during startup). On the bios settings screen, check the boot devices: the first should be the floppy drive, the second the CD drive and the third the hard drive (possibly with a fourth option of booting from a network device). Check you motherboard manual for more details.
The KNOPPIX CD contains a live Linux distribution based on Debian, with a KDE 3 desktop. The TINA libraries are in /usr/local/TINA5, and some TINA demos are in /usr/local/Tina5/tina-tools/toolkits/knoppix_tookit (they can be accessedvia the desktop icons).
