BBCD - Bootable Cluster CD 2.2.1c

BBCD - Bootable Cluster CD 2.2.1c

The BCCD was created to facilitate instruction of parallel computing aspects and paradigms. more>>
BCCD - Bootable Cluster CD was created to facilitate instruction of parallel computing aspects and paradigms. Part of the difficulty instructors face is lack of dedicated resources to explore distributed computing aspects lack of time to preconfigure and test the supporting environment.

The BCCD image addresses this problem by providing a non-destructive overlay way to run a full-fledged parallel computing environment on just about any workstation-class system...Were happy to say that this now includes the MAC too!

The BCCD does share similarities with a few diskless solutions for clustering, such as the Warewulf project, the thin-OSCAR approach, Cluster Knoppix (only an openMosix system, no MPI/LAM/PVM build tools, ...), and so on. This is definitely the trend in HPC. But the main differences are that the BCCD will always fit in your pocket, be highly customizable for specific institutions needs, and will always be geared toward education and not dedicated clusters.

The "gar" build system also sets the BCCD apart from other projects. "gar" is a mix between BSDs "ports" system, Linux from scratch, and gentoo Linux. With gar, you can build an entire BCCD image from net-fetched sources in about two hours (assuming you have a primed ccache!).

The BCCD is also distinctly different from NPACI-Rocks, OSCAR, Cluster in a box or other type of mass-imaging clustering project for two reasons:

1. Its a non-destructive overlay on top of the current hardware. Once a system is rebooted, it reverts back to its original state. It is intended to be booted "over top" of a currently-configured Windows/Linux/BSD/etc. system.
2. Its focus in on educational aspects of High-Performance Computing (HPC) instead of the HPC core. Students will have a much better appreciation and understanding of how to tweak an MTU setting or wire the topology across a cluster if they understand how a distributed computation is laid out! Emphasis is placed upon building, configuring, and running distributed applications.

In the meantime, feel free to download the iso and play with it -- and reports any bugs that are not already in the bugtracker !"

GoblinX 2.0

GoblinX is a Live-CD that is based on the excellent Slackware distribution. more>>
GoblinX is a Live-CD that is based on the excellent Slackware distribution.
GoblinX is directed towards those users who appreciate quality applications and a workspace that is both practical and beautiful.

GoblinX contains some of the most often used and praised applications for Linux. click on the ~Applications~ button to see which ones.

A Live-CD is a completely operational Linux system contained on one bootable CD that can de run from any CD-ROM drive, without requering the installation of anything on your hard drive.

When you want to return to your previous operating system, reboot and simply remove the GoblinX CD from your drive.

Using GoblinX is extremely easy. All you need is a bootable CD-ROM drive and GoblinX distro CD. GoblinX will run on your computer off of the CD using on-the-fly decompression. The first screen that appears after booting will allow you to choose the kernel image and add parameters to the system, a.k.a. "cheat codes", such as choosing to enable or disable certain "modules", choosing a non-default password, and/or selecting a screen resolution. However, you could just press "ENTER" at this prompt to initiate the default system settings, as GoblinX will still run perfectly well without needing any additional parameters.

The graphical boot uses a "boot splash", which not only warmly welcomes you, but displays thumbnails of each of the three available windows managers. If you wish to see the inner workings of the kernel while is booting just press F2, and the boot messages will be displayed instead.

At the end of the boot, the user will be logged and he can do all his works or simply enjoy himself.

This release is not of the preferred maturity, which means that it is probably still in development.

SchoolTool and SchoolBell are usually easy to install on Linux, Windows or Macintosh computers, but if youve got a high speed internet connection and a CD burner, the easist method may be one of these bootable LiveCDs.

AFROS Live CD

AFROS Live CD

AFROS Live CD is a bootable CD with a small collection of GNU/Linux software, ARAnyM and the AFROS. more>>
AFROS Live CD is a bootable CD with a small collection of GNU/Linux software, ARAnyM and the AFROS. AFROS Live CD boots and runs completely from CD, does not write anything to the harddrive and so is safe to try out. It is meant as a demo version of ARAnyM/AFROS. It is not the dreamed Installation CD of ARAnyM yet (although it could be modified to work so).

The underlying Linux kernel and related software provide the CD autoboot, automatic hardware detection, and support for many graphics cards, sound cards, SCSI and USB devices and other peripherals. ARAnyM plus AFROS provide our familiar and favourite TOS/FreeMiNT/GEM operating environment. Its all integrated seamlessly and after PowerOn boots straight to the Teradesk (GEM desktop).

AFROS Live CD is distributed in the form of a CD ISO image which is the usual way of distributing CDs electronically. The ISO image file can be burnt on a CD-R/RW and so youll get an exact copy of the AFROS Live CD I created on my machine.

AFROS Live CD configuration:

fVDI resolution and/or color depth change: open up the C:FVDI.SYS (double click it and select Edit), locate the "01r aranym.sys mode 800x600x16@72" line, comment it out and uncomment one of the other prepared lines (or just make up your own). Then reboot the AFROS.

The ARAnyM Config GUI is unfinished yet so changes to ARAnyM config must be done outside of ARAnyM in the .aranym/config file. When you quit ARAnyM you should be able to edit the file with one of the supplied GNU/Linux editors (in the future this shouldnt be necessary as I am working on the Config GUI as you read this).

DSL site (AFROS Live CD is based on the DSL) might give you some hints about preserving the changes youve made to the AFROS disk image or ARAnyM configuration (you might also want to read File Restoration -> HowTo in the X11 desktop). Note that this is untested by me and might be dangerous. Try it on your own risk only.
