KernelKit is a Knoppix GNU/Linux derivative targetting the development of Linux kernel and drivers, as well as Free Sofware embedded systems. It is currently being used in our Embedded Linux Training sessions.
Differences with standard Knoppix GNU/Linux:
- Removed applications not related to Linux kernel, drivers and embedded systems: games, office applications...
- Added tools and libraries for kernel and software development, in particular cross-compiling toolchains for many different architectures
Usefulness
- Embedded Linux trainings: provide all the needed tools in a tested configuration. No need to install a GNU/Linux distribution. No need to check installed package versions prerequisites.
- Embedded Linux demonstration: helps to discover, try and demonstrate useful tools in this technical area.
- Kernel, driver and embedded application development: toolkit to get the job done quickly and efficiently. Useful for support people away from their regular desktop, or for people who are not allowed to install software by themselves.
Cross-compiling toolchains
- uClibc toolchains: cross-compiling toolchains for the following architectures: arm, i386, ppc, m68k, mips, mipsel
Development
- ccache: a C/C++ compiler cache. Can save a lot of time when you compile the kernel over and over again.
- doxygen: a documentation system.
- SCons: a Software construction tool. A strong alternative to autoconf / automake / make.
- Splint: static C code checker.
Cross-compiling toolchains
- uClibc toolchains: cross-compiling toolchains for the following architectures: arm, i386, ppc, m68k, mips, mipsel
Kernel development
- git: the new kernel source management system.
- cogito: a git front-end.
Emulation
- QEMU: a cpu and system emulator for several platforms. Great to experiment with i386 or ppc embedded systems.
- SkyEye. An emulator for several popular ARM boards.
Performance analysis
- Linux Trace Toolkit": user space tools for analyzing system performance. Note that you can only analyse results so far, and not produce data, as the current KernelKit kernel doesnt have support yet for LTT.
- Valgrind: memory debugger and performance analysis tool for x86 Linux.
Lightweight applications for embedded systems
- Dillo: a very light and fast web browser.
- e3: a microscopic editor supporting several interface types (vi, emacs...).
Unix learning help
- fish: the Friendly Interactive SHell makes it much easier to use the Unix command line. The best way to start for beginners (Caution:: strangely broken in the latest KernelKit release)
- vimtutor: part of the vim package. Very nice way to learn vi in 30 minutes!
Misc
- gkermit: a serial communication utility.
- Psyco: a kind of Just In Time compiler for Python. Useful for running the BitBake / OpenEmbedded tool faster.
- xvncviewer: a VNC client. Sometimes useful to display target graphics on the host system.
Enhancements:
- This release adds the texinfo 4.8.dfsg.1-4 package (needed to run buildroot).

DECnet is a project to provide DECnet phase IV connectivity for Linux.
What you get is DECnet phase IV end-node and routing capabilities on your Linux box.
As it stands you can "set host" to an OpenVMS system, copy files to and from OpenVMS systems, run remote tasks and test the connections. You can also mount VMS directories as Linux Filesystems. VMS users can start terminal sessions on Linux or access to Linux files or foreign mounted filesystems as NCPFS, NFS, SMBFS via the FAL daemon.
You can use X-Windows from OpenVMS to Linux if you build your X-Server with DECnet support or download one. This makes Linux into an excellent (and cheap!) X-terminal for VMS as well as Unix. It is also possible to display Linux X programs on a VMS workstation using DECnet.
LAT is available as a client and server. This is completely independant of DECnet and does not require a DECnet-enabled kernel. I mention it here partly because I maintain both packages and partly because LAT and DECnet are generally of interest to the same group of people.
Enhancements:

gnome-session package is free software and is part of the GNOME project.
Contained here are
- the GNOME session manager
- the GNOME session manager configuration program
- and several other session management related utilities.

Trinacria Linux is a new Italian distribution based on KNOPPIX.

Trinacria Linuxs primary target markets are the Italian office users and Linux beginners.

recordMyDesktop is a program that captures audio and video data from a Linux desktop session, producing an Ogg-encapsulated Theora-Vorbis file.
recordMyDesktops main goal is to be as unobstrusive as possible by proccessing only regions of the screen that have changed.
Installation:
To compile the program you have to go through the regular drill:
~$ gzip -d recordmydesktop-x.y.z.tar.gz
~$ tar -x recordmydesktop-x.y.z.tar
~$ cd recordmydesktop-x.y.z
~$ ./configure
~$ make
~$ sudo make install
You will need the development headers for the following:
alsa (libasound)
X
libXext
libXdamage
libogg
libvorbis
libtheora
As well the regular headers, plus the ones for pthreads (both of which you should have if you have compiled anything else before).
Of the above, the most likely to be missing are probably those of libXdamage and libtheora but any recent linux distribution should offer an easy way to get them.
Enhancements:
- Corrected segmentation fault when recording non-fullscreen areas, using the
- full-shots mode(i.e. no Xdamage)
- Fixed arrays boundary overstep in BlocksFromList (resulting in segfault,
- especially when compiled with -fstack-protector)
- Removed the need for Xdamage to be present even when it is not used.
- Added follow-mouse option(i.e. capture area tracks the mouse cursor).
