Subsonic is a free, web-based media streamer. Although primarily designed for MP3, it works for any audio or video format that can stream over HTTP (for instance WMA and OGG).
With Subsonic you have access to your entire music collection wherever you are. Use Subsonic application to share your music with friends, or to listen to your own music while at work. You can stream to multiple players simultaneously, for instance to one player in your kitchen and another in your living room.
Subsonic is designed to handle very large music collections (many thousand albums). It uses a combination of directory structure and tag parsing to organize the music.
If you have constrained bandwidth, you may set an upper limit for the bitrate of the music streams. Subsonic will then automatically resample the music to a suitable bitrate. (Supported for MP3 only).
In addition to being a streaming media server, Subsonic works very well as a local jukebox. The intuitive web interface, as well as search and index facilities, are optimized for efficient browsing through large media libraries.

mkvtoolnix is a set of tools that allow users to display information about, extract streams from, merge several streams into, and split Matroska media files. Supported video stream types include streams from AVIs, Ogg/OGM, and RealVideo files.
Supported audio formats include Vorbis, RealAudio, MP3, MP2, FLAC, AC3, and AAC. Several subtitle formats are supported, including SRT, SSA, ASS, VobSub, and many others.
The resulting files from mkvtoolnix can be played back with various media players on Linux/Unix or the Matroska Direct Show filters under Windows.
Enhancements:
- This release fixes a couple of issues with the AVC/h.264 support, changes the defaults so that the annoying "NALU size length" error message does not appear anymore, and features a few usability enhancements.

Gecko Media Player is a browser plugin that uses GNOME MPlayer to play media in a browser.

The project should work with all browsers on Unix-ish systems(Linux, BSD, Solaris) and use the NS4 API (Mozilla, Firefox, Opera, etc.).

Gecko Media Player is in heavy development, but I wanted to get some code drops out there so that people can start using and testing it.

Ixion is a media player that uses wxWidgets and GStreamer. Its is just a simple video player that can play at double or half speed. It can be useful as an example of how to write a simple app based on wxWidgets and/or GStreamer.

Ixion is a media player written in C/C++ using wxWidgets and GStreamer. It is not a bleeding edge, full-featured, eye-candy, all-in-one application; Ixion exists only because I needed a video player that could play at double or half speed. However, it can be useful if you want to see how to write a simple app based in wxWidgets and/or GStreamer. Source code is available for download under the GPL license.

BMP is a multimedia player that currently uses a skinned user interface based on Winamp 2.x skins.

The original project name was "beep". Then we discovered that another project of the same name existed, and extended it to "Beep Media Player" to distinguish the two.

This new name is of course cumbersome to type, so it was informally shortened to BMP (or sometimes BeepMP) for everyday usage. Along the way, somehow or another, some of the developers no longer recognize it as an acronym. There is still no official word on whether to drop the original form. But whatever happens, the name BMP is here to stay.
