newsx 1.6

newsx 1.6

Newsx is an NNTP client for Unix. more>>
Newsx is an NNTP client for Unix. It connects to remote NNTP servers and receives incoming and outgoing articles
Newsx is also well suited for large spools with normal feeds, being used for pulling newsgroups from specific NNTP servers that are not distributed in the usual manner. Since newsx obeys the normal news spool configuration file and requires little or no specific configuration, the administrative burden should be minimized.
Main features:
- compatible with C News and INN local news servers
- configuration relies on standard C News and INN mechanisms for setting up newsservers and newsgroups
- setting of which newsgroups will be exchanged with which remote server based on sys or newsfeeds files, making administration easy
- logging of errors that occurred, as well as article transfer statistics
- optional log file for actual articles posted, and collection of posted articles in folders
- has been designed to be nice, so as not to overload the remote news server
- uses only standard RFC-977 functions, so should be compatible with the vast majority of news servers
- comprehensive error recovery for posting as well as for fetching; failed postings will be retried at the next opportunity, while fetching will resume at the point where it stopped
- refers to news history database to prevent fetching of articles already in the local spool. will not fetch crossposted articles more than once. does not rely on Xref, since many sites does not provide it.
- interface to popular news filters like Cleanfeed
Pulling news
News transfer via fetching to local news spools is sometimes claimed to be an inefficient way of transferring news compared to connecting newsreaders directly to the remote NNTP server.
The fact of the matter is that if set up and used correctly, exactly the opposite is the case.
A local news spool allows news transfer to occur at off-peak hours, thereby decreasing the host server load in the critical period. This will tie up less modems at peak hours, as well as decreasing the connect time since the actual transfer will run much quicker.
A fetch based system is also easier to administrate then the feeding kind, since every site decides for itself what groups it will exchange with whom. The major down-side is that article propagation times will be longer. For sites that are leafs in the news distribution tree, this is usually not very important.
Much of the problems connected with news pulling is connected to the use of the RFC-977 NEWNEWS command. Most news servers has implemented this command in an inefficient manner, which will put severe loads on the newsserver. Newsx does not use NEWNEWS.

LNX-BBC 2.1

LNX-BBC 2.1

LNX-BBC is a mini Linux-distribution. more>>
LNX-BBC project is a mini Linux-distribution, small enough to fit on a CD-ROM that has been cut, pressed, or molded to the size and shape of a business card.
LNX-BBCs can be used to rescue ailing machines, perform intrusion post-mortems, act as a temporary workstation, and perform many other tasks that we havent yet imagined.
The LNX-BBC runs as a "live filesystem" CD. Nothing is installed, and the system returns to its previous OS once you pop the LNX-BBC out.
The LNX-BBC philosophy is "leave no trace". The LNX-BBC does not even mount your hard drives read-write.
To be a useful rescue system, it provides you with the tools to modify your hard drives. You must explicitly re-mount them read-write to take advantage of this.
We develop our own distribution specifically to fit in the space constraints of the tiny CD-ROMs. We compile everything from source code with -Os, and use an elaborate system of compression and pivot_rooting to make a 50MB CD-ROM hold all of the programs we include.
Enhancements:
- 2.4.19 kernel
- large IDE disk support
- more fonts
- more DHCP clients
- bittorrent
- bittorrent downloads of ISOs from the Web site
- bittorrent clients on the BBC
- coroners toolkit
- security upgrades
- openssh
- openssl
- new upstream versions of many software packages

tNews provides a PHP4 template-based news script with a full Web-based administration system. more>>
tNews provides a PHP4 template-based news script with a full Web-based administration system.

tNews is a set of PHP4 scripts designed to provide easy-to-use basic news headline support for websites. The system uses HTML-based templates to specify formatting of news pages, providing complete control of page appearance to the webmaster.

The systems backend is provided by a MySQL database, and support is included for generation of both news and old news pages. News HTML pages are only regenerated when changes are made to news headlines, so end users suffer no delays caused by database access or parsing of scripting code.

All administration and setup is done through a Web-based interface, so no editing of text files is required.

Newsadmin 1.1

Newsadmin 1.1

Newsadmin is a simple PHP news publishing system for Web pages. more>>
Newsadmin project is a simple PHP news publishing system for Web pages.
Newsadmin is a simple news administration system that features news editing and several separate news editor/ administration accounts.
News articles can have a news image that can be uploaded with the article (using news editing form). There is a news archive page for past articles.
Long articles can optionally be cut on main view and read using separate readarticle "read more" page.
This script can quite easily be customized to different needs.
Main features:
- There can be several editors that can type and publish news. Afterwards, they can modify or delete their news.
- There can be several different administrators that can add, delete and modify other editors and admins.
- Editor has possibility to upload a picture related to news. If ImageMagick is present on the server, the script uses convert-tool to resize it to wanted size.
- It is easy to print news with print_news(num)-function. print_news also cuts long articles (maximum length configurable) and links to readarticle.php with which you can see whole article.
- If you know HTML and a little PHP (okay, you ONLY need some common sense...) you can also make your own printing functions in printfunctions.php.
- Gnu Gettext is used used to translate translate this into foreign languages. If you translate this application to your language, please send me .po file :) Translatable .po-files are in po/-directory and they are installed in locale/-directory. Read po/HOWTO-TRANSLATE.txt
- Simple news archive page to crawl the past.
- You can process articles trough parsewiki if you want to use its formatting features (configuration variable). This requires perl to be installed. Doesnt work if php is in safe mode (shell_exec doesnt work then). See http://doc.tikiwiki.org/tiki-index.php?page=Wiki+Text+Formatting to have an idea how it works when enabled.
- And thats not all! In addition there is:
- Calendar script by ikemcg with which you can edit events. One week onwards can be printed on your web page with print_thisweek() from functions.php;. Login to calendar with same usernames&passwords as in newsadmin.
