Axelq 0.80

Axelq 0.80

axelq is a queue manager for the download accelerator axel. more>>
axelq is a queue manager for the download accelerator axel. axelq basically reads some URLs, caches them and runs axel to download them.
To install just run ./install, or check ./install --help for options.
You can uninstall with ./uninstall, provided the file installed is still
present. If it is not, you can specify the same options you gave to install
(except --axel=...) to make it work.
Enhancements:
- update! axelq 0.80 available. Nothing to really write home about just a bug fix. (axelq didnt properly detect whether or not a download was finished or not and deleted a URL from the queue if the download was interrupted)

Sanselan is a Pure-Java library reads & writes a variety of image formats. more>>
Sanselan is a Pure-Java library reads & writes a variety of image formats, including fast parsing of image metadata (size, color space, icc profile, etc.).

This library is pure Java. Its slow, consequently, but perfectly portable. Its easier to use than ImageIO/JAI/Toolkit (Sun/Javas image support), supports more formats (and supports them more correctly). It also provides easy access to metadata.

Although not yet version 1.0, sanselan is working and is use by a number of projects in production.

It is Open Source; free as in freedom and free as in beer.

jailctl 0.80

jailctl 0.80

jailctl was originally written to overcome some of the apparent shortcomings of FreeBSD 4.x-series. more>>
jailctl is a FreeBSD /bin/sh script to ease the creating and maintenance of jails.
jailctl was originally written to overcome some of the apparent shortcomings of FreeBSD 4.x-series; the complete lack of utilities to create and manage jails.
This situation has changed somewhat with FreeBSD 5.x, but instead of giving up on jailctl I have decided to upgrade it to support this new platform as well - and to reap the benefits of the new tools available in 5.x.
Although there are a few other packages out there that help doing this, I wasnt really happy with any of them and - thinking I could do better - decided to write a jail management script myself.
Whether or not I have succeeded in creating something useful for anyone other than myself is yet to be determined.
Main features:
- Start and stop jails
- Create jails (with installworld and subsequent cleaning up)
- Upgrade jails (with installworld and mergemaster)
- Deleting jails
- Backing up jails
- Restoring jails
- Show jail status and process list per jail
Installation:
Consult the INSTALL file for installation instructions. If you dont use the port (sysutils/jailctl) to install, make sure you consult the jailctl(1) man page, after copying the jailctl.1.gz file to /usr/local/man/man1 if necessary (as described in INSTALL).
Enhancements:
- This release adds the ability to specify custom paths for jails.
- The default configuration files have been slightly adjusted for jails.
- The jailctl man page has been updated, and a jails.conf man page added.

Wikalong is a FirefoxExtension that embeds a wiki in the SideBar of your browser, indexed off the url of your current page.
It is probably most simply described as a wiki-margin for the internet.
What are some possible uses?
- Also See. Interactive pointers on where else to look
- Discussion. Just plain old commentary
- Notes. Plain old note taking
- A roaming blog. Use kwikis blog feature and you can edit, others can view your thoughts on a site by site basis
- Web Site development (dont forget you could restrict your wiki behind http auth)
- Developer Notes, todo lists on a page by page basis.
- Corporate Notes, suggestions to developers, things theyld like to see
- Support / Sales Tool, script or advice to support team (on a per page basis, you get the idea)
- Users install for self help
- Adblock. Recording of effective Adblock filters for the current page.
- Product reviews. Perhaps eventually with Amazon-like ratings?

jGetFile 0.80

jGetFile 0.80

jGetFile is a scriptable command-line mass-file downloader that is specifically geared towards non-HTML files. more>>
jGetFile project is geared towards mass downloading specifically non-html files from the web. Web crawlers and website downloads are widely available and work very well. Not all web-based file crawlers are equal however.

Few file crawers handle this href scenario: < a href="http://www.foo.com?url=http://youreallywantthislink.com/files" >< /a > jGetFile was engineered to be able to handle as many extraneous href configurations as possible. Although it does not handle all possible cases, more will be supported in future releases.

jGetFile supports a highly configurable means to filter the acceptance of links within the program. A user can use the -i or -e options to have the program only traverse links that start with the addresses the user specified, or to exclude links that start with the specified addresses.

Alternatively, for the powerusers, one can specify a BeanShell script through the -als option. This allows for abritrarily complex rules to be specified for accepting links, like accept only links at depth 1 that begin with www.blah.com, exclude links at level 2 that begin with www.foo.com, and exclude links at level 2 that contain word cat. The depth variable is currently not available to custom scripts, but will be in the next release.

There is no gui in the works, and because of the intended simplicity of this program, one is not planned in the future either. Also, jGetFile is not intended to replace wget, although its initial features were based on wget. jGetFile has the single goal of downloading files fast and efficiently from the web.

Omega 0.80.2

Omega 0.80.2

Omega is a Rogue-like role-playing game. more>>
Omega project is a Rogue-like role-playing game.

Omega is a rogue-like game featuring character development, a large map, and a warped sense of humor. There are almost as many variants of Omega as there are of Rogue in general. This version is maintained by Erik Francis.

There should be little need for the wizard to actively maintain the game. But.....

After years of play, the file omega.log may get unwieldy and overlarge. This file can simply be truncated as follows. Log records are now one line at a time, so just delete as many lines as you like, making sure there are no blank lines, and that the file ends on an end of line.

You can even remove omega.log completely as long as you replace it with a null file of the same name. If you opt to make omega not setuid, omega.log must be publically writeable.

Net::DRI 0.80

Net::DRI 0.80

Net::DRI is a collection of object oriented Perl modules that provides an abstract and uniform interface for DNS providers. more>>
Net::DRI is a collection of object oriented Perl modules that provides an abstract and uniform interface to connect to domain name providers, either registries, registrars or an entity at another level.
Thus Net::DRI can be used by a registrar to establish connections with various registries, or by a reseller that needs to connect with its registrar, or by an end client that needs to connect with its provider, be it a registrar or not, without being forced to use the specific interface available from the provider!
Net::DRI can then allow access to functions that were not even available in the native provider interface, such as batch processing. Furthermore, by hiding differences between providers interfaces, an application using Net::DRI for its connections will almost not have to be changed if there is a need to change providers, or if one provider changes the way it operates (new interface, other protocols, and so on...). With this solution, it is easy to adapt to political or technical changes of its registration providers.
Net::DRI implements many transports and protocols: this allows to take into account specifics of various providers. It is an open framework, and it is easy to add new providers, protocols and transports; it also allows to easily handle cases close to a standard but with few differences. Net::DRI handles synchronous providers (ex: through a web site, the answer comes immediately) as well as asynchronous ones (ex: by email, the answer can come many hours after the request).
Net::DRI implements RRP and EPP, which are two IETF standards. It is the only independant and free implementation of these two standards. Everywhere it is possible, Net::DRI standardizes on EPP (for example for return status codes) by translating other cases to EPP.
Net::DRI can handle many providers simultaneously, even if they offer services in the same domain names, through as many simultaneous connections as needed with various protocols and/or transports for the same provider.
Enhancements:
- This release adds full support for .LU as well as updated support for .AT and .BIZ.
- It also adds two new protocols that can be used by anyone, not only registrars: DAS is used by .BE and .EU to query only the availability of a domain name, and Whois (RFC3912) with parsing is provided for .COM, .NET, .ORG, .BIZ, .INFO, .AERO, and .EU.

Fair NAT 0.80

Fair NAT 0.80

Fair NAT is a script for configuring NAT on dedicated Linux routers. more>>
Fair NAT is a script for configuring NAT on dedicated Linux routers. This is the home of my linux router shaper script which allows something like fair bandwidth sharing among clients in the local network. The script is not great or anything - please dont expect the holy grail here - I just thought Id publish it because many people helped me write it and maybe someone has some use for it. I bet there are still lots of things that can be improved. Sorry about the crappy design of this page, I dont have time to put more effort in better looks.
You have a certain number of Clients (User A - User N) in your LAN which are connected by a Switch (or a Hub or BNC) to the Linux Router which is supposed to act as a gateway to the internet. The trouble now is, User B has a lot of downloads running and User C uploads stuff day and night, which leaves User A who only wants to use an interactive SSH shell in the rain, since B and C already use up all bandwidth the internet connection offers.
What we need to do is to share available bandwidth fairly among clients. In order to achieve this, I first tried several searches at Google and Freshmeat. This turned up quite a lot of results, like the Linux Advanced Routing & Traffic Control HOWTO which is a must-read and also contains great scripts, like the Wondershaper for single users. Another great general purpose script I found was HTB.init, which doesnt do anything by default, but gives you an easy way to setup HTB queues. In case you prefer CBQ, theres a CBQ.init too. If you dont know what Im talking about, read the HOWTO above or continue reading here.
Since I never found a script that did exactly what I wanted, I decided to write my own. Its designed to be an all-I-need script, therefore it does not just setup Traffic Shaping, but Masquerading and Port Forwarding too. In short, it does everything that has to do with IPTables and Traffic Control. I use HTB (Hierarchical Token Bucket) to share bandwidth among clients (one class per client). On top of that I added a PRIO queue to prioritize interactive traffic on a per-user basis. On top of PRIO I set SFQ to treat connections fairly. In version 0.72, experimental support for IPP2P to recognize peer-to-peer traffic was added.
This is the simplified scheme for routing:
HTB class (for bandwidth sharing)
|
-- PRIO (for prioritizing interactive traffic)
|
--- Interactive: SFQ (to treat concurrent connections fairly)
--- Normal: SFQ
--- High-Traffic: SFQ
[ --- P2P: SFQ (if IPP2P support is enabled only) ]
I bet this can still be improved and Im always interested in ways to do so. In case you want another class structure, this can be done by replacing the parent_class and user_class functions in the script. See CLASS_MODE in Configuration section and the function documentation in the script for details. Feel free to send me your own functions with a short explanation, if you want me to make them available for everybody.
Heres a "real" graphic, which shows the complete qdisc/class structure on $DEV_LAN if you use the unmodified example configuration file. This graphic was created using a hacked version of Stef Coenes show.pl script and GraphViz. Click here to see it, but I warn you: its quite big. Heres a similar picture, which includes IPP2P support. Note that there are more filter rules (the blue arrows) now which put the filesharing traffic into the users prio band 4.
Main features:
- This is a variable with a space-separated list of features that should be enabled. Default is all enabled if you dont set this variable.
- PROC:
- Allow Fair NAT to change some system variables in /proc, like setting /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward to 1.
- MODULES:
- Try to load kernel modules for QoS first.
- RESET:
- Fair NAT will replace all existing iptables rules with a very basic (empty) configuration. Not healthy for firewalls. You can disable this feature to keep the original rules in place. See Firewall Support below.
- NAT:
- Allow Fair NAT to configure NAT. You could disable this if you prefer to set this up yourself / let your firewall do it.
- FORWARD:
- Allow Fair NAT to configure Port Forwarding. Same as NAT, you can disable this if you dont need it.
- QOS_DOWN:
- Shape download traffic. If you know a little bit about traffic shaping and believe that download shaping is completely useless, feel free to disable this.
- QOS_UP:
- Shaping upload traffic can be disabled also. If you disable this and QOS_DOWN also, you could use Fair NAT for setting up NAT and Port Forwarding only, although thats not really the purpose of the script ;-)
- TOS:
- Allow Fair NAT to modify the TOS (type-of-service) field of packets. Right now, Fair NAT relies on this TOS field for shaping, so using this feature is highly recommended.

vidprofile project is a collection of a few components designed to fully test mpeg2enc from mjpegtools.
vidprofile was made to answer the question:
Given a file size limit, what are the best mpeg2enc options (and values) to use which give the highest possible quality?
Every component is written in sh, making modification and patching relatively easy.
The package is released under the GNU General Public License.
Encoding any given video to MPEG-2 is a complex thing, just type man mpeg2enc at a prompt and youll see just how deep the hole goes. mpeg2enc has an abundance of command line options, and each one tweaks the encoded output (some options tweak to larger degrees than others). vidprofile offers a set of tools to let you fully test each of the options in mpeg2enc and quantify the output. The tools in vidprofile will let you:
- Find the output video bitrate for every mpeg2enc option for a given input video
- Find the time factor when encoding (Will it be faster than real time? Slower? By how much? 2.3x?)
- Find the Peak-Signal-to-Noise Ratio between the original video and the encoded one.
- Capture and keep a frame from each encoding to compare with the best measurement tool - your eyes.
