Papercut NNTP Server 0.9.13

Papercut NNTP Server 0.9.13

Papercut NNTP Server is a NNTP server written in Python. more>>
Papercut NNTP Server is a news server written in 100% pure Python. It is intended to be
extensible to the point where people can develop their own plug-ins and by that integrate the NNTP protocol to their applications.

The server is compliant with most of the RFC0977 standards (when they make sense and are needed) and implements a lot of RFC1036 and RFC2980 extensions to the NNTP protocol. It was tested against Netscape News, Mozilla News and tin (under Solaris) and it works properly.

The original need for this server was to integrate my PHP related web site forums with an NNTP gateway interface, so people could list and read the messages posted to the forums on their favorite News reader.

At first it wasnt intended to support message posting, but it made sense to allow it after seeing how effective the tool was.

The concept of storage modules was created exactly for this. I would create a Python
class to handle the inner-workins of Phorum and MySQL and if I ever wanted to integrate the server with another type of software, I would just need to write a new storage module class.

Anyway, back to the technical praise. Papercut NNTP Server forking-based on UNIX platforms and should be reasonably fast (that means basically: its pretty fast, but dont try serving 1000 connection at a time).

The best thing about the application is that it is very simple to extend it.

Viralator Proxy Virus Scanner 0.9.7

Viralator Proxy Virus Scanner 0.9.7

Viralator Proxy Virus Scanner is a Perl script that virus scans HTTP/FTP downloads request on a UNIX server. more>>
Viralator is a Perl script that virus scans HTTP/FTP downloads request on a UNIX server after passing through the Squid proxy server.
Even when I implemented virus protection for my network email server we still continued to get the odd virus. Most of the viruses came from people using free webmail accounts like Hotmail or Yahoo and downloading the infected attachments to their machines or through downloading junk.
Rather than block access to the users I decided to look at how we could better protect the network. I looked at a couple of different products both comercial and free but they were either too expensive or did not meet my needs.
That is how Viralator was born. Viralator Proxy Virus Scanner is licenced under the GPL.
Viralator should work in any UNIX system that uses Apache and Squid servers. We have reports about successful instalations on:
- RedHat Linux
- Mandrake Linux
- SuSe Linux
- e-Smith Linux
- Slackware Linux
- Conectiva Linux
- Debian Gnu Linux
Supported Redirectors:
- Squirm
- SquidGuard
- Jesred
Supported Virus Scanners
- AntiVir
- AVP
- RAV
- Inoculate
- Sophos Sweep
- McAfee
- Trend
- Clamav
- Bit Defender (free edition)
The original concept for Viralator came from the Viromat project. Without Viromat the Viralator project would not have had a starting point. We can also thank Ralph Meyer for badgering me into releasing the script under the GPL.
Enhancements:
- Parenthesis are included on the regular expression used to validate URLs.
- The character set checking step, which was not working before last patch released, has been fixed.

Faerion IRC Server 1.17.7.1

Faerion IRC Server 1.17.7.1

Faerion IRC Server project consists of an advanced, secure, multi-lingual IRC server for Unix/Win32. more>>
Faerion IRC Server project consists of an advanced, secure, multi-lingual IRC server for Unix/Win32.
Faerion is a Unicode-based IRC server. It features enhanced support and transparent conversion for different charsets, and provides a stealth network model, persistent channels, compressed links, etc.
Main features:
- Support for transparent, user-controlled charset translation (virtually) from anything to anything. This is done by using Unicode mappings, which can be installed or removed on the fly, without having to interrupt the server. The server supports a special "fallback" conversion table which maps all characters that are not supported by a users preferred charset to the closest looking characters. This process is typically referred to as "transliteration" and is widely used on Russian IRC networks to avoid problems with incompatible charsets. The difference is that with Faerion, the server takes all necessary investigation to see what should be transliterated, and what can be passed without changes.
- Clients that have native support for Unicode (UTF-8), will benefit from using it at full scale without the implication of "cryptic writings" (which raw UTF-8 is for a typical human eye).
- Support for "persistent channels": channels registered with the Channel Service (mode +r) are not deleted when the last user leaves. This slightly saves bandwidth and helps mitigate several privacy issues (such as channel key revelation).
- Support for channel forwarding based on user address matching rules: with channel mode +f enabled, all ban masks can have a ",#channel" suffix appended to them to forward clients to another channel instead of declining the attempt to join the channel.
- Limited portability. The server is currently available for most POSIX platforms (modern BSD and Linux variants) and Microsoft Windows.
Enhancements:
- The LIST command now requires users with unregistered nicknames to additionally specify a pseudo random number to prove their human nature, otherwise the command is ignored.
- Opers no longer need an O-line to use any command; remotely set +o works just fine.
- Fixed the charset conversion problem when a user gets registered on the server.
- Invite list no longer overrides ban list.
- Fixed a crash in WHOIS.
- Fixed to compile without warnings in -Werror mode with GCC 3+.
- Fixed the +c channel mode to disallow colors instead of stripping them. Also, when a topic is being changed by a nonop on a +c-t channel to something that contains colors, the attempt is denied.

Interprocess Communication Server(unix) 1.07

Interprocess Communication Server(unix) 1.07

Interprocess synchronization and communication primitives for C++ more>> RIPC is library providing interprocess synchronization and communication capabilities for processes running at different network nodes. RIPC provides wide set of standard primitives: semaphore, event, FIFO queue, barrier, shared memory, shared and exclusive locks.
Structure of RIPC package
RIPC package consists of two libraries:
ripcclient.lib
Provides stubs of RIPC primitives sending requests to the server
ripcserver.lib
Server implementation of RIPC primitives
RIPC supports local and remote sessions. Remote sessions created by RIPCClientFactory class establish connection with the server through TCP/IP stream socket. Server process should be started before clients. In this case primitives at local computer servers as stubs and redirect requests to the server. This mode is useful to provide synchronization and communication between several processes at the same or different computers.
Local sessions are created by RIPCServerFactory class. Them are useful to provide synchronization of threads within the same process (if you want to use more sophisticated synchronization primitives than standard synchronization facilities provided by OS). The single local session can be shared by all threads. No server process should be started in this case.
Quick start
Include files needed for use of RIPC package are located in inc directory. Libraries are located in lib directory. Version of RIPC for windows is provided with binaries of these librarier and server built by Visual C++ comiler. At all other system you will have to build these libraries yourself. Change directory to src and exceute make (for Visual C++ RIPC provides make.bat file which invokes MS nmake utility for makefile.mvc). By default static version of librarier are built. To produce dynamically linked librariers, edit makefile and assign set GENERATE_DLL=1. In case of using DLL libraries do not forget to include them in PATH (at Windows) or in LD_LIBRARY_PATH (at Unix).

Unison 2.13.16

Unison 2.13.16

Unison is a file synchronizer. more>>
Unison is a file-synchronization tool for Unix and Windows. It allows two replicas of a collection of files and directories to be stored on different hosts (or different disks on the same host), modified separately, and then brought up to date by propagating the changes in each replica to the other.
Unison shares a number of features with tools such as configuration management packages (CVS, PRCS, Subversion, BitKeeper, etc.), distributed filesystems (Coda, etc.), uni-directional mirroring utilities (rsync, etc.), and other synchronizers (Intellisync, Reconcile, etc).
Main features:
- Unison runs on both Windows and many flavors of Unix (Solaris, Linux, OS X, etc.) systems. Moreover, Unison works across platforms, allowing you to synchronize a Windows laptop with a Unix server, for example.
- Unlike simple mirroring or backup utilities, Unison can deal with updates to both replicas of a distributed directory structure. Updates that do not conflict are propagated automatically. Conflicting updates are detected and displayed.
- Unlike a distributed filesystem, Unison is a user-level program: there is no need to modify the kernel or to have superuser privileges on either host.
- Unison works between any pair of machines connected to the internet, communicating over either a direct socket link or tunneling over an encrypted ssh connection. It is careful with network bandwidth, and runs well over slow links such as PPP connections. Transfers of small updates to large files are optimized using a compression protocol similar to rsync.
- Unison is resilient to failure. It is careful to leave the replicas and its own private structures in a sensible state at all times, even in case of abnormal termination or communication failures.
- Unison has a clear and precise specification.
- Unison is free; full source code is available under the GNU Public License.

Project Observer 0.2.4 / 0.3.0pre1

Project Observer 0.2.4 / 0.3.0pre1

Project Observer is an autodiscovering network management system focused primarily on Cisco and Linux networks. more>>
Project Observer is an autodiscovering network management system focused primarily on Cisco and Linux networks.
Introduction & History
Autodiscovering PHP/MySQL/SNMP/CDP based network management system focused primarily on Cisco and Linux networks. Capable of automatically generating network diagrams. Networks are automatically discovered based on CDP data collected via SNMP. IP subnet SNMP scanning is not yet implemented but is planned.
The main strenghts of Project Observer lie in being able to easily navigate a large ISP style network, but it has also been designed to be competant at monitoring Unix servers and services such as Apache.
This is the third incarnation of this design that I know of, the original, Brockrigg, was written by Simon Woodward for Onyx Internet and the second, Kikker, was written by myself for Entanet International.
I used the Brockrigg system quite heavily whilst I was at Onyx, so its seemed only sensible for me to write something similar as Kikker when I moved to Enta. Project Observer has been written with learnt during the Kikker development, and will hopefully be a far more flexible and useful piece of software. With the exception of the unfinished diagram drawing code, Project Observer is far superior to the Kikker implementation.
Im currently using Project Observer as my primary network management/graphing system, but I wouldnt classify it as production software, far from it!
If youd like to test the software, please download it below and email me to tell me that youre using it! Its at the stage where a lot of user input, and development help!, is needed, so please contact me if youre using it.
Developed to work with
- Cisco Catalyst 2950, 3548XL, 3550
- Cisco 7200
- Linux Debian / Ubuntu
- FreeBSD (m0n0wall / pfSense)
- Most other Linux and Cisco hardware
Main features:
- Connected-device discovery via CDP.
- Aware of subnets to show machines on the same broadcast domain.
- Graph interface traffic, packets and errors
- Understands a simple interface naming scheme
- Graph cpu usage, load, memory usage, uptime, users, processes for Net-SNMP servers
- Aware of m0n0wall and pfSense SNMP limitations
- Graph mail statistics collected on remote hosts using mail-graph and courier-graph
- Collect data from Apache hosts using /server-status/
- Can detect Linux, FreeBSD, Windows and Cisco OS types
- Parses Cisco version strings and other OIDs to get hardware type, os version and os featureset
- Heavy use of overlib rollover images to ease use
- Generates primative network diagrams using graphviz

NTW Lisp 0.2.1

NTW Lisp 0.2.1

NTW Lisp is a server written in Common Lisp for applications that use the NTW protocol to communicate with a GUI client. more>>
NTW Lisp project is a server written in Common Lisp for applications that use the NTW protocol to communicate with a GUI client.
NTW is a collection of three things:
- A protocol used to describe GUI widgets and events.
- A client program which displays widgets described by the protocol and sends back events to the server.
- A set of server libraries in various languages used to write GUI apps that use the NTW protocol to communicate to a client program.
In short, NTW is useful for the type of web applications that people are trying to write using a web browser with "AJAX" but finding that approach too limited/non-portable/broken/difficult.
Main features:
- Speed -- Remote apps can run at a speed which is nearly indistinguishable from a locally running application. Since the client draws the widgets natively, its not necessary to transfer graphical data, only widget state data. This can be done asynchronously, so the responsiveness of the UI never suffers.
- Persistence -- Its just as easy to write the NTW protocol data to disk as it is to the network, so the state of the entire GUI application can be easily saved. This also happens transparently, so the developer doesnt have to spend any time loading and saving data. Also, if a network connection dies or the client computer loses power, the application can be restarted from the point of failure at the next connection.
- Portability -- using the protocol, an NTW server application running on a Unix machine could talk to an NTW client for Windows, and vice versa. So a developer could write a program on Linux that could be run from any OS without any porting necessary. Any language or platform that can read and write data to a network can use the protocol to create GUI apps.
- Scalability -- Since the NTW server does not store or draw widget graphics, the memory and computational overhead of running an NTW application is much less than a comparable X Window application. A low end machine could easily serve hundreds of remote clients.
- Productivity -- Users can run NTW apps without installing anything but the client. Developers can release new versions of their apps without the users having to do anything, much like a web page.

Glub Tech Secure FTP for Unix 2.5.17

Allow for a 128-bit encrypted secure connection to be made to a server for unix more>> Secure FTP is a client application/applet that allows for a 128-bit encrypted secure connection to be made to a server that supports FTP over SSL (or FTPS).
The application can be run via its graphical user interface (GUI) or from the command-line interface (CLI), allowing for headless (scriptable) operation. This makes Secure FTP a great option for both novice and advanced users.
The applet has been tested to run in Microsoft Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Safari. It can be configured to auto-login as an easy way for new users to transfer data from their machine to/from yours.
The client is both RFC 2228 and RFC 4217 compliant and offers both types of SSL connection options: explicit and implicit, which means more server compatibility.
Secure FTP is free to use for noncommercial use. Those wishing to use the client for commercial purposes are granted a license free of charge for 30 days. If you wish to use the applet version of Secure FTP, there is a cost associated with it for all uses.

Network Transparent Widgets 0.3.2

Network Transparent Widgets 0.3.2

Network Transparent Widgets is a protocol and application framework. more>>
Network Transparent Widgets short from NTW, is a protocol and application framework that allows a single server to serve thousands of remote GUI applications.
The client applications are nearly indistinguishable from local, native applications. The protocol is language and architecture neutral. Server language bindings for C and Java are in heavy development.
Main features:
Speed: Remote apps can run at a speed which is nearly indistinguishable from a locally running application. Since the client draws the widgets natively, its not necessary to transfer graphical data, only widget state data. This can be done asynchronously, so the responsiveness of the UI never suffers.
Persistence: Its just as easy to write the ntw protocol data to disk as it is to the network, so the state of the entire gui application can be easily saved. This also happens transparently, so the developer doesnt have to spend any time loading and saving data. Also, if a network connection dies or the client computer loses power, the application can be restarted from the point of failure at the next connection.
Portability: using the protocol, an ntw server application running on a Unix machine could talk to an ntw client for Windows, and vice versa. So a developer could write a program on Linux that could be run from any OS without any porting necessary. Any language or platform that can read and write data to a network can use the protocol to create gui apps.
Scalability: Since the ntw server does not store or draw widget graphics, the memory and computational overhead of running an ntw application is much less than a comparable X Window application. A low end machine could easily serve hundreds of remote clients.
Productivity: Users can run ntw apps without installing anything but the client. Developers can release new versions of their apps without the users having to do anything, much like a web page.
Reference Implementation:
The current reference implementation of the client implements most of the widgets in the Gtk toolkit, and is written in C using the GTK+ 2.0 toolkit for drawing the widgets and handling events. It compiles and runs on FreeBSD, Linux, and Windows, and likely other Unix variants also. Youll need the GTK+ toolkit installed to run the client, and the GTK+ development headers to compile it.
The source code also include a server reference implementation and a sample server application. The "server" is really a set of C language bindings to functions that create and send ntw widget data. The bindings can be used in much the same way as any other GUI toolkit. See the file "ntwtest.c" for the example application. Its been tested on FreeBSD, Linux, and Windows XP. The server library should compile and run on most systems with a C compiler and support for sockets, without the need for any additional libraries.
The protocol is defined by the two header files, ntw.h and ntw_signals.h. These are C header files that describe exactly the byte layout for each of the widgets and all of the opcodes and events that can be sent.
There are still some widgets missing, and some of the signals raised by GTK are not yet handled in the protocol. This will be fixed in the near future.
Note: Although the reference implementation is coded in GTK, the NTW protocol is designed to be independent of any particular widget toolkit. GTK was picked due to favorable design features and a favorable license.
Enhancements:
- 02JUL06 - Fixed bug in update.c where spin_button was switched with slider
- 02JUL06 - Removed status field from image_buffer widget protocol

vsftpd 2.1.2

vsftpd 2.1.2

vsftpd is a GPL licensed FTP server for UNIX systems, including Linux. more>>
vsftpd 2.1.2 is an efficient GPL licensed FTP server for UNIX systems, including Linux. vsftpd is an FTP server, or daemon. The "vs" stands for Very Secure. Obviously this is not a guarantee, but a reflection that I have written the entire code base with security in mind, and carefully designed the program to be resilient to attack.

Recent evidence shows that vsftpd is also extremely fast and scalable. vsftpd has achieved ~4000 concurrent users on a single machine, in a production environment.

If your main requirement from an FTP server is one of the following things then yes, vsftpd is probably the FTP server you are looking for:

  • Security
  • Performance
  • Stability

The only reason you might prefer a different FTP server to vsftpd is if you really need the configurability of one of the more bloated FTP servers. Having said this, note that vsftpd caters for the vast majority of use cases.

Even if vsftpd appears to be missing a feature, it is often satisfied by an external component such as PAM or xinetd / tcp_wrappers. In this regard, vsftpd is being a small modular component in the proper spirit of UNIX. Finally, consider moving to vsftpd even if it means sacrificing some whacky feature of your current FTP server. The security, performance and stability gains are waiting for you.

Major Features:

  1. Virtual IP configurations
  2. Virtual users
  3. Standalone or inetd operation
  4. Powerful per-user configurability
  5. Bandwidth throttling
  6. Per-source-IP configurability
  7. Per-source-IP limits
  8. IPv6
  9. Encryption support through SSL integration

Enhancements:

  • vsftpd-2.1.2 is released - with a couple of regression fixes. SSL support was fixed so that the data connection timeout does not fire incorrectly, and the bandwidth limiter is applied consistently. An absent per-user config file no longer fails a login (as per v2.0.7 and earlier). The build was fixed for various systems such as Ubuntu 9.04. Note that v2.1.2 is the same as v2.1.1 but with a compile fix for users with libcap-devel installed. . Please refer to the v2.1.2 Changelog and vsftpd FAQ (frequently asked questions) for a list of common questions!
  • If you use vsftpd, like it, and think it's worthy of a donation, then click on the Paypal button on the left of the page.
  • ftp.freebsd.org switched to vsftpd.
  • vsftpd tarballs are now GPG signed by me.
