Yet Another antiVirus Recipe 1.9.5
Yet Another antiVirus Recipe is a procmail that helps to filter out a lot of the most common e-mail worms. more>>
Yet Another antiVirus Recipe is a procmail that helps to filter out a lot of the most common e-mail worms.
For some of the above (plain iframe, clsid, xml, macro) e-mail is delivered normally but gets a WARNING in subject plus its old subject ($SUB).
Some of the warnings are:
WARNING-XML-CODEBASE-OBJECT-$SUB
WARNING-CLSID-EXTENSION-$SUB
WARNING-IFRAME-$SUB
WARNING-MACRO-$SUB
WARNING-NSCAM-SCORE:$NKNGS-$SUB
Main features:
- :: base64 signatures ::
- Most of these worms are MS-Windows executables and arrive at our e-mail encoded through base64 routines. YAVR uses especially selected signatures to locate these attachments. After that it places them in a directory (/virus/) sorted by name.
-
- :: iframe html exploit ::
- Through IFrame tag a html encoded e-mail can download and execute a file from a remote http site without informing the user.
-
- :: CLSID hidden extensions exploit ::
- Attachments which end with a Class ID (CLSID) file extension do not show the actual file extension saved and viewed with Windows Explorer. This allows dangerous file types to look as though they are actually innocent files, such as JPG or WAV files.
-
- :: xml codebase exploit ::
- Usage of some xml objects allow local files to be automatically executed, regardless of the security settings on the target machine.
-
- :: generic executable trap for bat, pif, vbs, vba, scr, lnk, com, exe ::
- The rest of MS-executable files that are not caught from base64 signatures end up in a virus-could-be file.
-
- :: generic macro detection for doc,dot,xls,xla files ::
- MS-Word and MS-Excel files that contain macro commands are marked with a warning.
-
- :: generic detection for most of nigeria scam e-mails (most of them) ::
- Nigeria scam e-mail is not a virus but a big spam problem... There are many good filters that use great algorithms for spam. This is just an add-on.
Enhancements:
- new switches for quarantine or not certain e-mailsbased on some ideas by Dan Smart
- YAVRQUARANTEXE if set to ON it sends unknown executables to /virus/virus-could-be as usual if set to OFF it delivers at inbox with a warning (and the X- header ;)
- YAVRQUARANTNIG same for nigeria scam
- YAVRQUARANTPRN same for porn e-mail read instuctions inside nkvir-rc
- X- marks in headers to help your own procmail scripts
- X-YAVR: MS-EXEC (any MS executable that wasnt identified by signatures)
- X-YAVR: NIGERIA (nigeria scam)
- X-YAVR: PORN (porn related)
- X-YAVR: MACRO (containing macro code)
- X-YAVR: XML-CODEBASE
- X-YAVR: IFRAME
- X-YAVR: CLSID-EXTENSION
- X-YAVR: SENDMAIL-EXPLOIT
- some more Worm.Moodown.b aka Netsky.b signatures
- another Mimail.Q

Qmail virus scanner 1.4
The Qmail virus scanner (QScan) is a mail filter for Qmail that scans incoming messages using the Sophos Antivirus engine. more>>
The Qmail virus scanner (QScan) is a mail filter for Qmail that scans incoming messages using the Sophos Antivirus engine, immediately rejecting infected content.
It is designed to be minimalistic, yet extremely fast and secure, and uses multiple pipes instead of the traditional temporary files and privilege separation. It works with non-native versions of the virus scanner like under OpenBSD with Linux or FreeBSD emulation.
You must create a temporary directory to extract MIME attachments, and replace Qmails original qmail-queue program with Qscan. Quick way to achieve this for the impatients :
mkdir /var/qmail/qscan
chmod 700 /var/qmail/qscan
chown qmaild:qmail /var/qmail/qscan
ln /var/qmail/bin/qmail-queue /var/qmail/bin/qmail-queue-old
Now, lets compile and install Qscan :
./configure --help
./configure [your beloved flags]
make install-strip
The last step is to replace the original qmail-queue program with our filter :
rm /var/qmail/bin/qmail-queue
ln -s /usr/local/sbin/qscan /var/qmail/bin/qmail-queue
Depending on your local configuration, it may be needed or not, but start with doing it :
chown qmaild:qmail /usr/local/sbin/qscan
chmod 6711 /usr/local/sbin/qscan
After testing, if everythings ok for you, remove the setuid bit :
chown 0:0 /usr/local/sbin/qscan
chmod 711 /usr/local/sbin/qscan

Jsmtpd 0.6a
Jsmtpd is a small and modular SMTP server daemon. more>>
Jsmtpd is a compact SMTP daemon (Email server), entirely written in Java. Jsmtpd project is basicly able to receive E-mail following the SMTP protocol, described in RFC 821. Each others functionnalities are implemented as plugin modules, allowing the core to remain small and easily understaindable.
As now, Jsmtpd is able to receive mail, check its recipients (ACL-SimpleACL plugin), check for viruses (filters-ClamAVFilter, connects to a ClamAV daemon), check for spam using the Java Jasen engine (filters-JasenAntiSpamFilter) or a spamassassin daemon, check senders via RBL plugin or blacklist plugin. Emails can be delivered localy using the mailbox writer (DeliveryServices-UnixMailboxWriter), or to a remote STMP server (DeliveryServices-RemoteSmtpSender). DNSQueries are also provided by a plugin (DNSJava).
Version 0.4 (Brinsop) has introduced two new extensions : TLS(SSL) support, and SMTP authentication.
Jsmtpd comes with three main services :
The receiver service : Its job is to listen for incoming STMP connection, chat with the client in order to receive E-mails according to ACL plugin.
The second service is the mail queue services. It holds the received mails (loaded or writen to disk). Whenever possible, it processes mails to the delivery service.
The delivery service is a filter plugin tree ending by a delivery service. A filter is basicly a piece of code that answers yes or not to an incoming email. Mails are then checked agains theses plugins, following a tree model. A the end of the chain, the mail is droped if it does not match the filters, or a delivery plugin is invoked to deliver the mail. For now, only two delivery services can be routed using the ACL plugin : local or remote mail.
Jsmtpds design is heavily based on plugins. Most functionnalities are implemented as plugins. Plugins interfaces are simple to understaind and implement. With minimal time spent learning Jsmtpd, you can rewrite how Jsmtpd handles :
Dns queries
Acces control list (who can do what on the runnning server)
Deliveries : you want to put your mail directly into your custom application ? Write a plugin !
IP filtering
Mail filtering
This server is designed to provide efficient ways to stop unsollicited mail or mail containing viruses. A Jsmtpd deamon cant be set as open relay ( youll have to write a plugin to do so ;).
Filtering spam can be done at two levels. Ip based filtering will reject connections from well known spammers or open relais smtp servers (ie misconfigured mail servers used by spammers to relay their mails). Content based filtering allows to check mail containing spam (using Spamassassin or Jasen) or viruses (using Clam Antivirus).
If you cant find a filter matching your needs, you can easily write your own and plug it in Jsmtpd.
Jsmtpd is intended to remain small, understaindable and (quite) fast. Without using filters plugin, minimal process is applied to the email data, providing best performances. If you need a more powerfull (in terms of functionnalities) email service solution, I recommend you to check out the jakarta James project and their mailet API.
This server runs over a Java Virtual Machine, and should make intrusions like buffer overflow more difficult to success.
Enhancements:
- In this release, code has been cleaned up and refactored (common-loggings by example).
- It includes several bugg fixes in ldap plugins and dns resolver mainly, and improved thread usage.
- New plugins have been added : maildir writer, lmtp delivery(experimental) and spf/greylist.

avpmilter 0.2-2
avpmilter is a sendmail milter interface to the Kaspersky antivirus daemon. more>>
avpmilter is a sendmail milter interface to the Kaspersky antivirus daemon.
Avpmilter gets virus scan result and tells sendmail MTA to send reject message upon virus detection. This program is not MTA, nor antivirus by itself.
In comparison with will Kasperskys kavkeeper it will improve performance of your mail subsystem because:
It will not reinject each message for each recipient back to sendmail MTA ( if sendmail receives, for example, one message for 30 recipients, kavkeeper will initiate 30 requests to antivirus daemon and 30 additional executions of sendmail program. Avpmilter will send only one request to antivirus daemon and will not initiate additional executions of sendmail program).
Avpmilter is small resident miltithreaded program, thus it avoids expensive fork() calls.
Avpmilter almost does not affects your current sendmail configuration. Moreover milter interface allows to run sendmail MTA and filter on different computers. avpmilter requires sendmail 8.11.x or 8.12.x built with milter support (which is the default option for sendmail 8.12). You can read about how to build and configure sendmail with milter interface in libmilter/README in sendmail source tree. Also you can find a good milter api ocumentation in libmilter/docs directory in version 8.12 of sendmail.
