PycURL is a Python interface to libcurl. PycURL can be used to fetch objects identified by a URL from a Python program, similar to the urllib Python module. PycURL is mature, very fast, and supports a lot of features.
libcurl is a free and easy-to-use client-side URL transfer library, supporting FTP, FTPS, HTTP, HTTPS, GOPHER, TELNET, DICT, FILE and LDAP. libcurl supports HTTPS certificates, HTTP POST, HTTP PUT, FTP uploading, kerberos, HTTP form based upload, proxies, cookies, user+password authentication, file transfer resume, http proxy tunneling and more.

libcurl is free, IPv6 compatible, feature rich, thread-safe, well supported and fast.
PycURL is targeted at the advanced developer - if you need dozens of concurrent fast and reliable connections or any of the sophisiticated features as listed above then PycURL is for you.
The main drawback with PycURL is that it is a relative thin layer over libcurl without any of those nice Pythonic class hierarchies. This means it has a somewhat steep learning curve unless you are already familiar with libcurls C API.
To sum up, PycURL is very fast (esp. for multiple concurrent operations) and very feature complete, but has a somewhat complex interface.
If you need something simpler or prefer a pure Python module you might want to check out urllib2 and urlgrabber. There is also a good comparision of the various libraries.
Enhancements:
- This release allows callable objects as callback functions.
- It adds the NEW_DIRECTORY_PERMS and NEW_FILE_PERMS options from libcurl 7.16.4.

Frox is a transparent FTP proxy that runs under Linux and BSD. It should also work on other UNIX OSes that use ipfilter.
It supports caching of FTP downloads, either by redirecting through a Squid proxy, or through its own local cache. Downloads may also be transparently scanned for viruses (through an external scanner).
Additionally there is an interface for writing scripts to add features or modify froxs behavior, and examples are included to limit download file size and to transparently direct connections to specific hosts to mirror servers.
The proxy is written with security in mind, and in the default setup runs as a non-root user in a chroot jail.
Enhancements:
- Log IP address in xfer logs when name resolution fails.
- Add ForceHTTP option to force downloads to go via the HTTP proxy even where caching will not be possible
- Close all file descriptors before execing virus scanner. Prevents frox waiting forever for some virus scanners to exit
- Compile time option for frox to alter argv[] so ps gives info as to what each frox process is doing
- Improve SSL logging and docs
- Fix for incorrect parsing of Deny ACLs which was introduced in 0.7.16

Negative peak intensity values are permitted; this permits the drawing of "pseudospectra" which, for example, illustrate peaks present in one spectrum but missing in another. Note that these negative peaks have no true intensities, but in some cases we assign different heights to illustrate the differences among different hypothetical peaks. In addition, pseudocoloring of both positive and negative peaks is performed to illustrate what type of ion that peak represents. In some cases these ions are labelled explicitly, although in practice it is best to minimize this labelling to avoid excessive clutter.
