Automatic Firewall is a script that will automatically configure a firewall. If you are a broadband or dial-up user who doesnt have a firewall script, you need to get one to protect yourself. AutoFW is made to help you do that with no efforts.
Many people when connecting to the internet need a firewall script made for them so they can surf the net without being susceptible to various attacks. Most, if not all (until now :-), of the existing scripts are written for a large range of requirements and require some tweaking to make them work for a specific user. However many users do not know which parameters to fill in the script config file.
AutoFW intends to provide a simple firewall script that you just need to fire and forget. You make sure to run it on computer start-up or just before connecting to the net, and it will detect network condition and setup appropriate firewall rules for you.
In order to be "smart" AutoFW has to be limited, the current scope of AutoFW are standard broadband connections, it will also cover dial-up users and stand-alone servers.
AutoFW works only for Linux IPTables firewall and needs the iptables utility to update the firewall, it also needs the ifconfig utility, both of these are available on any standard install of a GNU/Linux machine.
AutoFW also needs the ip program which is part of the iproute2 package, sometimes also called iproute. It is available as a package for any standard GNU/Linux install, not it might not be installed in your particular.
There are two parts that do automatic detection, one is for interfaces and IPs and the other is for open listening ports.
The interface part looks at all the active interfaces in the machine and classifies them between internal and external. It does that by looking at the IPv4 address of the device. If it is one of:
127.0.0.0/8
10.0.0.0/8
172.16.0.0/12
192.168.0.0/16
it is considered to be an internal IP and thus an internal interface, otherwise it is an external IP and thus an external interface. There is no handling of an interface with both an internal and an external IP on it.
The listening ports are scanned for a known port and the accompanying known program name that binds to that port, known ports are opened later in the configuration stage.
The configuration itself is very simple for now, without many of the bell and whistles that exist in other scripts, but it works for the basic needs and provides adequate protection.
Enhancements:
- Internal systems are now protected, as well as servers and NAT gateways.

GRCM uses gconf to store information about connections.

- Fixed a callback in the Connections Dialog that made the default arguments from the connection appear when selected.

Net::FreeDB2::Connection is an abstract class to represent connections to FreeDB/CDDB servers. After a successfull connection, FreeDB/CDDB queries, reads etc can be made to obtain/provide information from/to FreeDB/CDDB databases.

CONSTRUCTOR

new (OPT_HASH_REF)

Creates a new Net::FreeDB2::Connection object. By default connect () is called to initiate the connection but see option no_connect. See the implementation for complements/restrictions.

Options for OPT_HASH_REF may include:

client_name

Mandatory option to name the connecting client software.

client_version

Mandatory option with the client software version string.

client_host

The hostname of the client. Defaults to &Sys::Hostname::hostname ().

client_user

The user of the client. Defaults to scalar (getpwuid ($>));

freedb_host

The FreeDB/CDDB host. Defaults to freedb.freedb.org.

freedb_port

The port on the FreeDB/CDDB host.

proxy_host

Proxy host.

proxy_port

Port on the proxy host. Defaults to 8080.

proxy_user

Proxy user name to use.

proxy_passwd

Proxy password to use.

no_connect

Do not call connect () during instanciation.

NetworkControl is a utility to control and monitor network interfaces, including wireless ones (for which you see a signal strength meter, as shown).

NetworkControl addresses a conspicuous lack in most Linux distributions — most tend to be short on easy-to-use network utilities, even something as trivial as a robust, informative way to log on and off a dialup connection. NetworkControl also provides the connection IP, configuration and statistics (gleaned from "ifconfig" and updated each second), and provides graphic signal levels for wireless interfaces, handy for evaluating a system of wireless devices.

NetworkControl allows you to see network activity at a glance and lets you control your network interfaces in a fast, convenient way. It is designed to be easy to use and informative.

If you have downloaded the binary, just put it in /usr/local/bin, give it executable permissions and run it like this:
networkcontrol

You can make a desktop shortcut with this as its executable target.

If you have downloaded the source package:
Put it in any convenient location.
tar -xjf networkcontrol.tar.bz2
cd networkcontrol.dist
./auto_install.sh

If you dont want the automatic installation or you want to fine-tune the process, instead of running "auto_install.sh", after the unpacking step above, do this:

make -f Makefile.cvs dist
./configure
make
sudo make install

Obviously you may want to modify some of these steps to suit your platform.
