Angband 3.0.9
Angband is a freeware computer dungeon exploration game. more>>
Angband is a freeware computer dungeon exploration game based (loosely) on the books of J.R.R.Tolkien. You explore a very deep dungeon, kill monsters, try to equip yourself with the best weapons and armor you can find, and finally face Morgoth - "The Dark Enemy".
Angband has a very long history. It started 1990 as an improved and "Tolkienized" variant of Moria. Moria itself was created in 1985 and was inspired by Rogue (from the late 70s). Countless changes were introduced by many programmers on the way to the current versions of Angband.
Ben Harrison, the previous maintainer, cleaned up the source code and made it easy to enhance and port to the different computer systems. The clean, well commented and modular source is one of the reasons for its popularity and for the number of variants and other extensions available.
Its addictive, very addictive. Your REAL life will be influenced by playing! Dont say I didnt warn you!
Angband was originally text-based, but graphical versions are now available for almost every computer system. Some Angband players still use the old ASCII-based graphics. There are even a few sound effects available for multimedia freaks.
The original name "Angband" was created by J.R.R. Tolkien in the stories about "Middle Earth".
Angband was a mighty fortified citadel originally constructed by Morgoth (Melkor) in the earliest days of the world as an outlying fortress to his northern stronghold of Utumno. Utumno was destroyed by the Valar, and Morgoth imprisoned in Valinor for three ages, but on his return to Middle-earth, he took Angband as the seat of his power, and raised the towers of Thangorodrim above its gates.
Angband was besieged by the Noldor during the early part of the First Age, but the Siege of Angband was broken at the Dagor Bragollach. It was finally destroyed by the forces of the Valar at the end of the First Age, in the War of the Wrath.
Enhancements:
- This is a bugfix release that fixes over fifty bugs present in the previous release, none of which individually are particularly annoying, but collectively merit a new release.

Oangband project is one of many variants of Angband, emphasising intuitive rules, varied gameplay, and extra coolness.
This long-established variant (one of the older ones active) offers more individual and distinct classes and specializations, more intelligent and diverse monsters, and more subtle and interesting objects.
Depth of play is tremendous, with well-balanced ways to kill monsters that work from the moment you walk into the dungeon, to that dread day you face Morgoth, wielder of the Udun-Fire.

FAangband 0.2.3
FAangband is a first age Tolkien-based variant of Angband. more>>
FAangband is a first age Tolkien-based variant of Angband.
A roguelike game set in the wilderness and dungeons of Middle Earth in the first age. Fight your way through plains, mountains, forests, swamps, deserts and dungeons to face Morgoth, Lord of Darkness. Not a short game.
Here are the big changes:
- Races have been significantly changed. Half-Orcs, Half-Trolls, Half-elves and Shadow Fairies have gone; there are new varieties of Elves, Dwarves and Men. Dwarves as a whole tend to have better Intelligence than Wisdom; the reverse is true for (most) Elves and Hobbits. Different races also have significantly different starting conditions.
- There is wilderness. Wilderness is like and unlike dungeon. On the similar side, it is randomly generated in rectangular pieces; the "level" still only goes up or down by one in going from one piece to the next; there is a structured way of advancing through the wilderness. On the other hand, it looks different (no rooms); there are sometimes choices as to how to advance (north or west, maybe, rather than just down); and tactics become quite different. There are five basic types of wilderness - open plains, dense forests, rocky mountains, harsh deserts and pathless swamps. It also has day and night, which affects light-hating monsters and the players need for light.
- There are multiple towns, small and large, spread throughout the wilderness. Each race starts in its natural town. This means that the starting towns for some races are in the middle of quite dangerous wilderness. In order to reduce extreme effects of this (instant death, or instant growth of 15 levels), some races have improved starting equipment, and several races start with some experience already (advancing them in character level up to a maximum of level 5). High elves are no longer the easy option, at least at first. You can move your house to a different town, but only once you have walked there.
- There are multiple dungeons (five, to be precise). At the bottom of each is a guardian, who can only appear there or in special circumstances (which you may be able to guess...) be summoned. The first specialist ability (and second as well for warriors) is still learned at the beginning, but the two others each become available on killing a dungeon guardian. It is possible to ignore the other dungeons and head straight for Angband, but theres a heavy price to pay.
- Word of Recall works differently. Read away from your home town, it still takes you back there. Read in your home town, you are given a list of up to four points to recall to. When you recall back to town, you get the choice of which of your recall points you wish to update.
- Anything from later than the First Age has been removed. No more Rings of Power, Grishnakh, Anduril, Saruman, Witch-King, etc. There are some new uniques, artifacts and ego-items (and some just renamed). There are also new item sets, and some reworked artifacts.
- There is no savefile compatibility with Oangband or Angband. Savefiles had to change at least to accommodate changes to data structures (particularly the player data), and the big changes to races meant that any translation would be rather artificial. Anyone with an Oangband savefile should keep playing it in Oangband; anyone with an Oangband compatible Angband savefile (version 2.9.1 or older) should be congratulated and, well, upgrade.
Enhancements:
- large reduction in wilderness monsters
- better handling of savefile paths
- increase in wilderness vaults
- some extra dungeon vaults
- several bugfixes

ZAngband 2.7.4c
ZAngband project is a rogue-like roleplaying game. more>>
ZAngband project is a rogue-like roleplaying game.
The game of Zangband is a single player computer role playing game set in the world (although worlds might perhaps be more accurate) of Amber created by the author Roger Zelazny. Zangband is a variant of the game Angband which is descended from the game Moria which is in turn based upon the game Rogue (hence Zangbands classification as a roguelike game). Rogue was, perhaps, the first computer game to use the terminal screen graphically with ASCII characters representing the player, dungeon features, objects and monsters as opposed to the text adventures of its day.
In Zangband, a player may choose from a number of races, classes and magic realms when creating a character, and then "run" that character over a period of days, weeks, even months. Deep down inside, the real objective of the game is to increase your experience, and certain other characteristics, and also to collect useful items, to give you a decent chance against the great Serpent of Chaos, who lurks somewhere in the depths of the dungeon.
The player will begin his adventure on the town level where he may acquire supplies, weapons, armor, and magical devices by bartering with various shop owners. After preparing for his adventure, the player can descend into the dungeon where fantastic adventures await his coming!
Once your character has killed Oberon, who lives on level 99 (4950) in the dungeon, a magical staircase will appear that will finally allow you to reach level 100. The Serpent of Chaos lurks on this level of his dungeon, and you will not be able to go below his level until you have killed him. Try to avoid wandering around on level 100 unless you are ready for him, since it has a habit of coming at you across the dungeon, to slay you for your impudence.
If you should actually survive the attempt of killing the Serpent of Chaos, you will receive the status of WINNER. You may continue to explore, and may even save the game and play more later, but since you have defeated the toughest creature alive, there is really not much point. Unless you wish to listen to the rumors of a powerful ring buried somewhere in the dungeon...

Bastille 3.0.9
Bastille Hardening program locks down an operating system. more>>
Bastille Hardening program "locks down" an operating system, proactively configuring the system for increased security and decreasing its susceptibility to compromise. Bastille project can also assess a systems current state of granularly, hardening reporting on each of the security settings with which it works.
Bastille currently supports the Red Hat (Fedora Core, Enterprise, and Numbered/Classic), SUSE, Debian, Gentoo, and Mandrake distributions, along with HP-UX and Mac OS X. Bastilles focuses on letting the systems user/administrator choose exactly how to harden the operating system.
In its default hardening mode, it interactively asks the user questions, explains the topics of those questions, and builds a policy based on the users answers. It then applies the policy to the system. In its assessment mode, it builds a report intended to teach the user about available security settings as well as inform the user as to which settings have been tightened.
Why use it?
Bastille broke new ground by working to educate users about security, and help them make balanced, informed choices. Many users have found Bastilles secondary goal of educational just as useful as its primary goal of system hardening, leading some organizations to make an interactive Bastille hardening session part of their training regimen for new system administrators. In this spirit, Bastille can allow the user to run through the entire interactive portion without applying the chosen changes.
Who Uses It?
Bastille has become a vital part of the security hardening space. Its the most used hardening tool for Linux and HP-UX and is shipped by the vendor on SuSE, Debian, Gentoo and HP-UX. It is covered in all of the major books on Linux Security and has been the subject of a number of articles. Most recently, the Center for Internet Securitys Linux Hardening Guide has recommended the use of Bastille to help harden systems.
Enhancements:
- Updated for Fedora Core 5, SUSE 10, Mandriva 10.0, 10.1, 2006*, and preliminary support for Tiger.

Zorp 3.0.9
Zorp is a modular proxy suite written in C. more>>
Zorp is a modular proxy suite written in C. Zorp provides you full control of encrypted connections. Being capable of thoroughly inspecting the traffic embedded into the secure channels, Zorp detects and stops possible attacks, viruses and other threats. This feature protects your network from the dangers lurking in webpages, infected e-mails and others places, whether they arrive in HTTPS, POP3S, IMAPS or tunneled SSH traffic. The individual features of SSH and SSL (port and X forwarding in SSH, encryption algorithms allowed in SSL, etc.) can be separately controlled, enabled, or disabled completely. Zorp can also control which sites can be contacted, verifying their certificates automatically, thus allowing users to connect only sites that can be trusted.
Zorp makes all traffic related to your servers fully auditable, without the need to change or modify any of your applications. With the power to transparently monitor and control the encrypted (SSH) channels used in server administration, all traffic (encrypted and other) to and from the servers can be reliably logged and audited by a device independent from the client and server applications used to access the servers. This improves full compliance to the criteria of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act as well.

APODIO 4.3.9
APODIO is a Mandriva-based specialist live CD designed for musicians and multimedia enthusiasts. more>>
APODIO project is a Mandriva-based specialist live CD designed for musicians and multimedia enthusiasts.
The new version 4.2.2 is considered a test release; it contains a large collection of software for audio, video and graphics manipulation.
The APODIO live CD boots into French by default, but English and a number of other languages are also supported.
The default window manager is the light-weight PWM, with OroboROX provided as an alternative.
The APODIO project was started in 2003 by the APO33 association It has two objectives : First : to create a live CD for PC, a complete audio station under GNU/Linux that could quickly be installed on the hard disk, or work straight away as a CD, with a Ram of at least 320 Mo, and practical and simple administration tools.
The 3.0.9 April 2003 APODIO version of the live CD immediately recognizes and adjusts itself to your equipment, your sound and graphic display adapters and your eventual hard disk partitions. It offers various interfaces, such as Gnome, Rox, Fluxbox... and a choice of software to work on sound. It is based on the GNU/Linux Mandrake 10.0 distribution and on the mklicecd group scripts for the creation of the live CD or of the hard disk.
The second objective is to give some sort of permanence to part of our work, while adhering to the principles of GNU/GPL. Unlike most other distributions that tend to drift too far away from the Linux Debian/RedHat/Mandrake communities, we wished to remain close to Mandriva, to allow users to reclaim the tools for themselves.
From the start, APODIO was not meant to become a finished or final product, but rather, a toolbox, more adapted to the common user than to the developer ; more practical than technical. Since we follow closely the Mandriva platform, we can concentrate more on what we find interesting in the first place, while making sure that our work will keep up with changes in hardware and software.
The complete remade July 2005 APODIO-4 version utilizes less RAM than the V3 ; it is based on - and can be synchronised with – Mandriva 2006 (cooker). Some video processing software has been added and the PureData base has been considerably increased.
We now have a practical base in the evolution of the live CD APODIO on Mandriva and new projects are in progress : the Poulpe (Octopus), a live CD that can be the basis for a sound and plastic installation, in various places linked by web-radio flows. Ref. the site : (http://www.apo33.org/poulpe) The Ubik, the live CD for a standby or a disabled situation, becomes a sound and video sculpture, connected to any other Ubik. It can be responsive to a network or to a keyboard/mouse set. Each user can either modify the CD base or the PureData patches found in a known directory in a disc, usb, fp... and thus personify his/her Ubik.

Any number of players can move around in their own window, finding and using items and battling monsters. They can choose to cooperate or compete in the same world.

Featherweight Linux 1.3
Featherweight Linux is a Live-CD installable Linux distribution that is remastered from Feather Linux. more>>
Featherweight Linux is my Live-CD installable Linux distribution that I remastered from Feather Linux, which is built on knoppix technology. Youll find some great people over at Feather and you can find some good documentation there.
Their goal is to make a light and fast Linux with a very small footprint that can be installed on USB pen drives and such. My goal is a bit different. I want a full featured Linux that isnt bloated with a kazillion gigs of crap that Ill never use. I want a small footprint that is light and fast, even on older machines, but still carries a knockout punch.
So I took Feather and stripped out a bunch of apps that I never even thought of using. I wanted to make an easy to understand desktop that was compatible and easily configurable with the latest apps being developed, so I removed all of the window managers and installed a minimal KDE 3.3 desktop.
I included the most popular internet apps like the Mozilla Suite complete with plugins, Gaim, Gftp etc... I added full printer support and wifi support. In my test environment, it automatically detects and configures both my network printer (HP PSC 1210)and my linksys wireless card. Hopefully, itll do the same for you. It is debian based so I installed Synaptic for easy upgrading and totally FREE software management. Customizing your own system with the software that you want is only a few clicks away.
In its current state, the ISO is about 240mb and the HDD install is about 700mb, which is about 1/4 of all the other overweight distros out there. Once you install it, you can install OpenOffice and a bunch of other stuff if you need it, but I just wanted to make a good solid functional base so you can build your own system if you want.
Featherweight is intended for novice users with "some" linux experience, intermediate users, and experienced linux users alike. It has a pretty straight forward install but you should know linux and HDD partitioning basics before trying to install it.

Enhancements:
- Ive upgraded e2fsprogs and e2fslibs as well as some other critical core files.
- I updated the apt sources and added abiword and acroread, as well as the acroread mozilla plugin, and I added kppp.
- I upgraded samba and switched the quick start konqueror and kde help buttons with a mozilla button and a konsole button.
- I fixed the install script where some folks were getting a blank screen after installation and added a grub install script for easy installation of grub after the initial install.
- The total installed size is now about 800mb.
<<lessTheir goal is to make a light and fast Linux with a very small footprint that can be installed on USB pen drives and such.

PhysicsFS 1.1.1
PhysicsFS is a library to provide abstract access to various archives. more>>
PhysicsFS is a library to provide abstract access to various archives. It is intended for use in video games, and the design was somewhat inspired by Quake 3s file subsystem. The programmer defines a "write directory" on the physical filesystem. No file writing done through the PhysicsFS API can leave that write directory, for security. For example, an embedded scripting language cannot write outside of this path if it uses PhysFS for all of its I/O, which means that untrusted scripts can run more safely.
Symbolic links can be disabled as well, for added safety. For file reading, the programmer lists directories and archives that form a "search path". Once the search path is defined, it becomes a single, transparent hierarchical filesystem.
This makes for easy access to ZIP files in the same way as you access a file directly on the disk, and it makes it easy to ship a new archive that will override a previous archive on a per-file basis. Finally, PhysicsFS gives you platform-abstracted means to determine if CD-ROMs are available, the users home directory, where in the real filesystem your program is running, etc.
You can find PhysicsFS in next :
The Build Engine can optionally be compiled with PhysicsFS support, which is good, because its standard packfile format offers no compression or long filenames.
ParaGUI is a cross platform toolkit built on Simple Directmedia Layer. That library has, among other useful stuff, a C++ wrapper for PhysicsFS. Here is an API reference for their interface to PhysicsFS.
SDL_sound comes with a technology demonstration program, playsound, that is a generalized sound file playback program. playsound can use PhysicsFS to stream audio out of archive files on-the-fly.
Falling Block Game is a Tetris-style game that uses PhysicsFS under the hood.
Excido is a 3D arcade game using PhysicsFS.
Tales of Middle Earth is an Angband-based RPG that uses PhysicsFS.
Dead Meat is a Bomberman clone with PhysicsFS support.
netPanzer, a multiplayer tactical warfare game, utilizes PhysicsFS.
Z-Raid is a River Raid clone using PhysicsFS on PocketPC devices!
Final Frontier Trader is a 2D single player space strategy, combat, and trading game powered by PhysicsFS.
Yac3De is a 3D engine that is using PhysicsFS to access Doom3 pakfiles in order to load their maps.
The maya2q3 plugin uses PhysicsFS to load shader resources from Quake 3 packages.
MindBender uses PhysicsFS for resource management.
Lincity-NG is a highly-polished SimCity clone that makes use of PhysicsFS.
Probably other software uses PhysicsFS. If you know of one, drop me a line.
Enhancements:
- The build system was changed to CMake. 7zip support was added.
- The library was made Unicode-clean and reentrant.
- Symbolic link support was added for Windows Vista, Linux, BeOS, OS/2, and Mac OS X support was improved, and Mac OS classic support was dropped.
- Many other fixes and improvements were made.

OpenVZ Live CD 2007-01-04
OpenVZ Live CD is an Operating System-level server virtualization solution, built on Linux. more>>
OpenVZ Live CD is an Operating System-level server virtualization solution, built on Linux. OpenVZ creates isolated, secure virtual environments — VEs (otherwise known as virtual private servers, or VPSs) on a single physical server enabling better server utilization and ensuring that applications do not conflict.
Each VE performs and executes exactly like a stand-alone server; VEs can be rebooted independently and have root access, users, IP addresses, memory, processes, files, applications, system libraries and configuration files.
Here you can find OpenVZ Live CD image. It is based on Knoppix 5.1.1. Live CD is a great way to test drive the OpenVZ technology without a need to actually install it on your machine.
This CD contains the following OpenVZ packages:
* kernel 2.6.18-028stab027
* vzctl 3.0.16
* vzquota 3.0.9
plus the number of precreated templates:
* Debian 3.1 minimal
* CentOS 4 minimal
* Fedora Core 5 minimal
It also contains all the software from the original Knoppix 5.1.1 CD, excluding:
* OpenOffice
* GIMP
* Frozen Bubble
The above packages were taken out to make some room for OpenVZ packages.
