GNU Radio is a collection of software that when combined with minimal hardware, allows the construction of radios where the actual waveforms transmitted and received are defined by software. What this means is that it turns the digital modulation schemes used in todays high performance wireless devices into software problems.
What is a Software Defined Radio?
Joe Mitola says, "A software radio is a radio whose channel modulation waveforms are defined in software. That is, waveforms are generated as sampled digital signals, converted from digital to analog via a wideband DAC and then possibly upconverted from IF to RF. The receiver, similarly, employs a wideband Analog to Digital Converter (ADC) that captures all of the channels of the software radio node. The receiver then extracts, downconverts and demodulates the channel waveform using software on a general purpose processor."
For our purposes, on the receive side, the idea is to get a wide band ADC as close to the antenna as is convenient, get the samples into something we can program, and then grind on them in software.
Enhancements:
- GNU Radio 2.6 includes sending and receiving data at up to 1Mbit/sec using GMSK. - Theres also support for the new USRP Flex 400 transceiver daughterboards.
- Handling of all daughterboards has been unified, so most apps will work without modification on any of them. Weve got a framework in place to allow you to build and experiment with your own MACs. 2.6 includes the "null MAC". A carrier sense MAC is the next logical step.

Gnomeradio is a FM radio tuner for the GNOME desktop (version 1 and 2).

Gnomeradio is an FM radio tuner application. It should work with every FM tuner card that is supported by video4linux. Remote controls are supported via (optional) lirc-support. Gnomeradio can also record radio as a Wave or MP3 file.

wmstradio is a doc app that acts as a radio for streamed media. It reads a list of "channels" and allows them to be selected in a radio like interface. wmstradio launches Real Player connecting to the site that you select.
The only configuring wmstradio needs is a list of RealAudio sites to connect to. This is provided through a directory called ~/.wmstradio which contains link files to the sites. These link files are what you get when you try to save the link through a web browser. They are text files containing a URL to the server real audio streamer. The name of this file is used as the name of the chanel in the wmstradio display window.
Enhancements:
- BUGFIX: shaifuljahari at yahoo.com pointed out that an empty .wmstradio directory caused the app to core on load. Fixed.
- MISC: Empty directories are now detected at load, and during the lifetime of the app. Appropriate error message given on standard error and lcd.

Campcaster is a free and open source automation system for radio stations.
Campcaster is the first free and open radio management software that provides live studio broadcast capabilities as well as remote automation in one integrated system.
Radio is still the most powerful method of disseminating news and educational material to disadvantaged groups and in areas with high poverty, scant technological infrastructure, and/or instability. But while radio is extremely effective, the tools available to most community stations are very limited in function. The Campcaster project addresses this by giving stations a free and open source, end-to-end solution for managing a radio station by using standard personal computers.
Campcaster is the first free and open source radio management software to provide both live studio broadcast capabilities as well as remote automation in one integrated system.
Campcaster has been designed to be modular and scalable. It can be used by both large and small stations in a number of scenarios:
- Unmanned broadcast units can be controlled remotely through the Internet
- An unlimited number of Campcaster-powered PCs in a radio station can deliver live broadcasts as well as program automation by accessing a central audio storage system
- A stations library can be digitized and made centrally accessible from both local studios as well as the web
- Reporters and show producers can file their reports and shows directly to the central archive fron the field via any web browser
Campcaster is capable of combining local audio files and remote web streams, supporting the widely used MP3 format and its open equivalent Ogg Vorbis.
As with all Campware products, multilinguality is a central feature in Campcaster: virtually everything in the user interface can be translated into any language using Unicode. Multilinguality is implemented on all levels of the user interface as well as for the metadata for audio files in the storage system. Campcaster is currently available in 9 languages, and it is very easy to localize into additional languages.
Campcaster has been designed for a Linux environment, but it was built it on top of standard, cross-platform classes. Such an architecture allows for easy porting of Campcaster to different operating systems in the future.

DMCRadio is a ncurses-based console program for radio tuner cards supported by the Video4Linux system. To run DMCRadio, youll need a kernel with Video4Linux support.
Beside, youll need the ncurses-package. And DMCRadio is only usefull with a radio-card (or a tv-card with radio-tuner)
Installation is easy:
1. Untar the source archive
2. ./configure
3. make
4. make install
5. Make sure, everybody can access your radiodevice (usually /dev/radio)
Enhancements:
- different (more correctly) behaviour on different terminalsizes:
- smaller than 80x24: refuses to start
- 80x24: doesnt show the scroller (and wont start a scrollthread)
- 80x25: "normal" view
- greater than 80x25: centers
- should now evaluate autoconfs PREFIX-variable (eg. expects the fonts in $PREFIX/share/DMCRadio/ - default is still /usr/local/share/DMCRadio/)
- the fonts are there again (forgot to include them in version 1.1.3)
- "make install" now installs the fonts in $PREFIX/share/DMCRadio/
- added a "debian"-directory, you may build debian-packeges with "dpkg-buildpackage" now (after applying the patch (diff))
- added standard header define stuff in the headers

cRadio is a QT - X11 interface that can control a radio card connected to your pc. cRadio started as a result of me wanting to learn X-windows programming and due to the fact that there were no decent looking radio card programs for linux out there. I took a brief look at the various tool kits out there, and decided on using qt as it was the simplist and quickest toolkit to use. I sensed the need to try to re-write cRadio using qtk, but firstly Ill be devoted to improving and finishing off this version.
