Rippy the Aggregator 0.13

Rippy the Aggregator 0.13

Rippy the Aggregator is a lightweight RSS aggregator written in vanilla PHP. more>>
Rippy the Aggregator project is a lightweight RSS aggregator written in vanilla PHP.
There are several Web sites (Slashdot, for instance) that I visit regularly or semi-regularly to check for the latest news; there are also several more (like, say, the EFF) that post regular updates and that Id like to visit regularly, or that would like to have me visit regularly, but which I dont visit regularly because its just too much work to keep track of all of them, and too disappointing when I remember to check and find nothing new. I even run a Web site of my own which Id like to have people check regularly - but since I dont spend time making the rounds of my friends similar sites, I cant expect them to visit mine. Rippy the Aggregator aims to solve all these problems.
There is a standard called RSS, for Web sites to publish their updates in a machine-readable format. An appropriate client can quickly visit all the Web sites youre interested in, download their updates, and present you with a customized list of all the newest items. Most "blogging", "portal", and "content management" software already generates RSS files (although its operators may be unaware of that!), and there are services like Syndic8 that compile lists of RSS "feeds". So it only remains to get an appropriate client.
That presents a problem. I hacked an RSS output onto my Web-site updating scripts, so I had that aspect covered, but then I wanted to start reading others RSS feeds, and I discovered that the client programs you can get on the Web mostly suck. Some of them are Windows-only, so those are right out. I saw one in Java that looked pretty good, but its Web site didnt provide a way to download it except through some kind of weird Hot-Buzzy-Java-Scripted-Auto-Virus-Install-Plugin-Thing - there was no actual file. I did eventually find its source code, but it required third-party libraries.
Then I looked at several RSS readers that were written in Perl or PHP and designed to run as scripts on a Web site. Those had possibilities, but they required multiple third-party libraries (Perl) or an SQL server and compiled-in PHP modules that most people dont have (PHP).
The best attempt I found was one written in Python, but in order to make it run I had to start not one but two background server daemons, which would make it tricky to use on my office computer at school. There are Web sites that provide the service of RSS reading, but they all require registration, cookies, JavaScript, etc. I couldnt find an RSS reader (or "aggregator", as theyre called) that I could just download and have it work. Thus, it was necessary to create one: enter Rippy!
The name "Rippy the Aggregator" refers to an Arrogant Worms song about a cute, cuddly little alligator who goes "chomp, chomp, chomp," down in the bottom of the swamp, swamp, swamp. Abram Hindle has suggested that Rippy the Aggregator should go "grep, grep, grep," down in the bottom of the net, net, net. Anyone wanna write the rest of the song?
Main features:
- Cute name
- Written in PHP (needs 4.3.0 or above)
- Doesnt require any compiled-in optional libraries that dont ship with PHP
- Stores its cached data in flat files, no database needed
- Freely licensed and customizable under the GNU GPL version 2
Enhancements:
- Parser ruggedness and general stability were improved, and support was added for setting options like user agent and proxying when acting as an HTTP client.

Aggrevator is a cross-platform RSS/Atom aggregator that uses a MySQL 4.1 database for storage. more>>
Aggrevator is a cross-platform RSS/Atom aggregator that uses a MySQL 4.1 database for storage. It is designed to make life easier for people who want to subscribe to large numbers of blogs by using scoring, sophisticated search, filtering and sorting.
Its designed for people who are subscribed to many RSS and blog sites and is capable for advanced search, filtering and sorting.
Aggrevators chief distinguishing factor is its use of a MySql database to permanently store every entry fetched from every blog you subscribe to. This means that the user can read offline any of the several thousand blogs theyre interested in. Since Aggrevator is written in Java using the SWT library for its GUI the user can use it on multiple platforms (I have tested it using Linux and Windows) with a single remote database or on one machine with a local database.
Aggrevator offers the user search functionality which lets them track down entries they have read in the past even if theyre offline. The user also has the option of using the filters as a means of finding a particular blog by typing a minimal set of characters and seeing the list of candidates shrink as they type each character.
Main features:
- easy to find in large number of blogs
- filtering capabilities of blogs

Plagger 0.7.11

Plagger 0.7.11

Plagger is a pluggable RSS/Atom feed aggregator written in Perl. more>>
Plagger is a pluggable Atom/RSS feed aggregator written in Perl.

Everything is implemented as a small plugin and you can mash them up together using Plagger core API and plugin hooks.

You can think of Plagger as a blosxom or qpsmtpd for RSS aggregator.

Plagger comes with various plugin API hooks so that third-party plugins can extend:

Subscription (Bloglines, Google Reader, My Yahoo!, OPML)
Custom Feed (mixi, Mailman, Google News)
Filter/Tag Content (del.icio.us, Technorati, URLBL, FeedBurner)
Smart Feed (Tag, Rating, Enclosure)
Widget on output (del.icio.us, Digg.com, Technorati, Bloglines, Blogpulse)
Publish (Gmail, SMS, CHTML, Mobile Mail, XHTML, JavaScript, IMAP, NNTP, PSP, iPod, metaWeblog, Atom)

Plugins can be enabled / disabled using condition modules (= rule-based). So you can do "Forward all the updates to my Gmail account, but if the title contains Plagger and bookmarked by 5 users on del.icio.us, SMS me as well."

By default, Plagger doesnt do anything with the 2 tough parts of aggregator: Crawling and User Interface, but lets other services/tools do it. My recommendation is to use Bloglines for Crawling and Gmail for User Interface (and Search).

Since rev7, Plagger comes with a dumb aggregator plugin that fetches RSS/Atom feeds synchronously. You can use OPML remote subscription and the Simple aggregator to consume a small number of feeds. It doesnt do de-duplication of feed updates yet.

Were in the active development right now. API and config file format might be changed in the future.

Enhancements:
- Access InGame Editor
- Press F11 with any application to toggle the InGame Editor on and off for editing games at runtime
- Controllerbased Input
- Intuitive componentbased input handling and behaviors that are easily extended
- Support for Editor/DevTool Plugins
- Devtools have been factored out of WorkspaceManager and are organized as simple and extendible or plugins
- Input focus fix
- Input isnt handled when working with the devtools
- Clicking on the render window will remove focus from devtools, enabling input again
- DragDrop Scene Creation
- Drag templates from the Scene Object Templates window onto the Scene window
- Reorganize the scene graph in the scene window and the templates in the Scene Object Templates window
- Click on nodes in the Scene window to select them
- Property Editing:
- Select nodes by clicking on them in the render window or Scene window and edit their properties in the Properties window (Property Inspector)
- Select components (such as the rendering engine or application) from the Components menu in the InGame Editor to edit their properties
- The properties are grouped and have descriptions and any custom properties added will show up as well
- New properties and ways of editing properties (especially collections) will be added in the future as well as fixes for properties like Orientation angles, Absolute Position, Direction, etc that may not work properly at the moment.
- About Box:
- The Help > About RealmForge GDK menu item now shows the About Box properly with information about the project and its developers.
- Event Editing:
- Click on the "View > Event Scripting Designer" menu item to work with the designer to visually script events
- Selecting a target from the dropdown list and an event from the list right below it
- Drag scripts from the Tree of all scripts or from the list of named delegates
- Add any method in the entire framework or from plugins that has a void SimpleMethod() or void Script(object owner, object args) signature by specifying the fully qualified (include namespace) class name and members (fields and properties) that need to be traversed to get to it from a static member of that class
- You can leave the class name empty an will default to the RealmForge.RF, the singleton aggregator.
- Saving your game:
- The File > Save menu item now actually works and will save the current scene (for applications that load the scene from a master module, doesnt work for the Sample Browser tech demos yet). This feature is buggy and verbose, however since it is finally supported it wont be long before the editor will be fully usable for game development!

parabola 0.5

parabola 0.5

parabola project is a browser-based news feed aggregator. more>>
parabola project is a browser-based news feed aggregator.
parabola is written using Ruby on Rails and uses the FeedTools module for all feed parsing.
Enhancements:
- Ruby 1.8.2
- Rails 1.0+
- MySQL 4.1+
- Rubygems
- FeedTools 0.2.18+
- acts_as_taggable 1.0.4+
Installation:
Database
Create a MySQL database called parabola_p. Add a user with proper access to it:
$ mysql -u root -p
mysql> CREATE DATABASE parabola_p;
mysql> GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON parabola_p.* TO parabola@localhost IDENTIFIED BY parabola;
Now initialize the database with the schema:
$ mysql -u parabola -p parabola_p < db/schema.mysql.sql
If you use a different username than parabola and/or a different password than parabola you should subsequently edit config/database.yml to reflect that.
Now test by running the built-in webserver:
$ ./script/server -e production
If you can connect to http://localhost:3000/ and see a login form you are up and running.
Updating Feeds
A script called updatefeeds.rb takes care of downloading feeds and updating the database according to your settings. It is located in the support/ directory.
You can run this manually but this gets rather boring after a while. Better to add it to whatever scheduling program you are using such as cron and have it run maybe once an hour. The script just needs to be pointed to the root of where you extracted parabola. Lets say its in/var/htdocs/parabola/. You would then run it as such:
$ updatefeeds.rb -r /var/htdocs/parabola/
Make sure the entire public/cache/ is writable by the user which the script runs as. Below this directory favicons are stored.
Each feed is at maximum checked once per hour but you can give the script the -f option (for force) to force it to check each feed every time the script is run.
Using
If you use the special tag :nfp: on a feed its articles will not appear on the frontpage.
Enhancements:
- This release deletes articles older than the keep days setting for a feed, and articles with dates in the future are now set to current date and time.
- It shows date on each article in the articles view, and a New feed menu item has been added to be able to quickly add new feeds.
- There are several major bugfixes.
