JackLab Audio Distribution is a remastered openSUSE for musicians, producers and media creators.

The JackLab Team is proud to present the first public alpha-release of the JackLab Audio Distribution (JAD). The 1.2GB DVD iso can be downloaded from jacklab.org.

We have found that musicians have particular requirements for their Linux environment. A Linux-based distribution that is designed for music needs to be flexible, powerful, yet easy and quick to use. All of these things are essential in a busy, creative environment. Thinking about these requirements, we decided to base JAD on openSUSE due to its stability and long development history. All major administrative tasks can be done graphically and easily without having to learn any complicated terminal commands.

JAD will be fully compatible with the recently released openSUSE 10.2. It will contain a full production environment for media production, primarily music. For this, the JackLab team added a Realtime Kernel version 2.6.19 to have fast audio processing with a latency up to 1.5ms. The default audio system will be based on the the Jack Audio Connection Kit (JACK) which is designed for the needs of musicians and producers and gives a professional audio/midi controlling interface.

The installer is based on the acclaimed YaST2, which also serves as an easy-to-use administrative tool. To keep as many essential computer resources for music as possible, we have decided to use Enlightenment D17 desktop shell as the default window manager. KDE desktop environment is also included, so the user-friendly file manager - Konqueror, is available along with Kmail, Konversation, k3b and other KDE tools. For music creation and editing, we have included around 70 audio applications with sequencers, synthesizers and tools all installed and ready to go. User-friendly support for setting up and running VST instruments and effects is given. Additionally, there are applications for video production and a graphic suite that are included on the DVD. For browsing the internet, we have included Firefox 2.0 chosen for its stability, security and extendability.

JAD is a community based effort and is the culmination of the work of many contributors. Recently, JackLab and PackMan (packman.links2linux.de) have joined forces to offer JAD access to the PackMan repositories so that up-to-date audio software, non-audio software and multimedia codecs are available to JAD users. The JAD development team would like you to participate in the development process too. There are different ways you can help:

-As a tester, you can download the most recent version and use the bugtracker to report any problems.
-You can participate in the graphics contest: The best graphics submitted will be used as default for the bootscreen, wallpaper, skins and icons.
-You can submit feature requests and take part in discussions on the mailing list.
-For taking part in providing user support, there is a web based forum and an IRC channel - it is also an essential part of the development process to see feedback.

ActiveBPEL project is a robust runtime environment capable of executing process definitions created according to the Business Process Execution Language for Web Services (BPEL4WS, or just BPEL) 1.1 specifications.

astGUIclient is a GUI client application for the Asterisk open-source PBX.
This is a suite of programs that are designed to interact with the Asterisk Open-Source PBX Phone system at a client computer level to extend the functionality of your phone and system.
The suite of software is designed to work with an Asterisk system that has Zap(T1/E1/PSTN),IAX or SIP trunks and SIP/IAX/Zap phones.
The main GUI application, astGUIclient, is a set of PHP web-based scripts utilizing Javascript and XMLHTTPRequest functions that work through a browser to give real-time information and functionality with nothing more than an internet browser on the client computer.
Another component included with the astGUIclient package is the VICIDIAL auto-dialer. This is a list dialer(another real-time web-client) that can be added to Asterisk and is highly configurable with detailed logging. VICIDIAL can dial one-call-at-a-time or you can put it in auto-dial mode and it acts as a predictive dialer. VICIDIAL also can function as an ACD for inbound calls or for Closer calls coming from VICIDIAL fronters and even allows for remote agents that may only have a phone.
The software suite also includes a from-scratch software installation document, full English and Spanish versions of the web-clients and admin pages, and the Asterisk Central Queue System(ACQS) which allows for optimized and streamlined Asterisk integration.
This group of applications is designed to run on top of just about any version of Asterisk so no messing around with the Asterisk source code is necessary. For more information see the system requirements. astGUIclient is not an Asterisk configuration utility, it is an end-user Graphical User Interface.

Package SNMP Subagent provides indexed package information via SNMP output.

The Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) forms part of the internet protocol suite as defined by the Internet Engineering Task Force.

The protocol can support monitoring of network-attached devices for any conditions that warrant administrative attention.

The SNMP protocol is extensible by design. This is achieved through the notion of a management information base or MIB, which specifies the management data of a specific subsystem of an SNMP-enabled device, using a hierarchical namespace containing object identifiers, implemented via ASN.1.

The MIB hierarchy can be depicted as a tree with a nameless root, the levels of which are assigned by different organizations. This model permits management across all layers of the OSI reference model, extending into applications such as databases, email, and the J2EE reference model, as MIBs can be defined for all such area-specific information and operations

Speak Good Chinese is a cross-platform application based on GTK technology that allows you or your students to train their Mandarin pronunciation. Our software is based on Praat, leading software in speech analysis. Our speech technology is backed by the Institute of Phonetic Sciences part of the University of Amsterdam.

Enhancements:
- This release makes administrative tasks easier for teachers or students that want to manage or distribute their own wordlists.
- Another new feature in this subsystem is the shuffle function.

NicE Desktop is a Debian-based, live Linux distribution. Being a live distribution, it runs from portable storage, such as a CD/DVD or USB flash drive. This operating system can be run in both text mode and graphical mode.

NicE Desktop comes with many programs for both recreational and administrative purposes. Its main goals are to be useful and entertaining while maintaining user-friendliness, as well as to provide a "complete" temporary operating system for any PC user.

The Data Mine is a search engine designed to give users an unusually powerful interface. It is designed around human-computer intelligent interaction (making the computer a tool so humans can use their intelligence).

The project divides the screen into two halves: one lets you find all the instances of your querys keywords, and the other lets you look through a highlighted version of the results you choose.

Installation:

Basics

To install, run "./install" and answer the questions provided. This will run a Unix-flavor install-style script and should create a working, out-of-the-box installation when supplied appropriate values.

Setup and Customization

The Configure link at the bottom of the Data Mine search page provides a menu you can use to customize the data mine.

The main engine is intended for anyone to be able to use; the setup pages are written for techies. If you arent sure what a regular expression is, for instance, ask someone whos more technical.

Security

The present release of the Data Mine has not been closely scrutinized for security, and should be treated as such by security-conscious administrators. If you discover a vulnerability, please contact the author.

You are strongly encouraged to change the password in /usr/share/datamine/password.

The default installation sets /usr/share/datamine and contents to a relatively permissive mode. Administrators are encouraged to set directory and contents to mode 700, owned by the effective user ID that CGI scripts will be running under. This is usually apache or nobody.

Usage:

The Data Mine is designed to be run as a straightforward web application, with much administrative activity performed on-web.

Once it is set up via the Configure link, just explore.
