MetalServe SVN 250
MetalServe provides a standalone IRC DCC file server. more>>
MetalServe provides a standalone IRC DCC file server.
MetalServe is a standalone DCC file server that can be used to share files on Internet Relay Chat (IRC) networks such as EFNet and Undernet. Unlike the only available similar Unix program, iroffer, which offers "packs" of files, MetalServe offers single files similar to the way the SDFind, SPRJukebox, and OmenServe scripts for mIRC, a Windows IRC client, work.
The motivation for writing this program arose because the masquerading Linux router between my desktop IRC client and the IRC servers in the Internet made sending files even harder than getting files. Additionally, the router was hosting the files to be offered anyway, so why not let the serving application run on the router as well. However the only available application as of the time of this writing (April 2002) was iroffer, which, as mentioned, operates in a different manner than desired.
I took a look at the available IRC clients and their scripting capabilities but in the end "standard" ircII 4.4M, BitchX, Epic etc. didnt look powerful enough, had too many security holes etc. and various other aspects, including speed and independency, gave me reason enough to write a dedicated server application in C. In other words, I preferred the "precision screwdriver" approach.

ADS Dexter 0.40
ADS Dexter is a utility for extracting data from scanned graphs. more>>
The following is an excerpt from a poster presented at the American Astronomical Societys 2000 Summer meeting in Rochester, NY.
ADS roughly 1,000,000 scanned pages contain numerous diagrams and figures for which the original data sets are lost or inaccessible. Having scans for the figures invites digitizing the data points to recover at least a part of these data.
Performing this digitization automatically is still beyond the capabilities of current OCR systems, but the computer can ease this process for a human.
This was the starting point for Dexter, a Java applet that runs in the users browsers and provides an interface for selecting the part of the page that is of interest. On that selection, coordinate axes, points and error bars can be marked and, of course, corrected. [...]
In the future, we plan to implement some recognition algorithms that would, e.g., trace a line for the user or automatically search for markers.

Scrinchy 0.15
Scrinchy is a tiny HTTP multitasking webserver. more>>
Scrinchy is a tiny HTTP multitasking webserver that I wrote for my own purposes, but which is also a fitting response to the now fairly bloated Apache.
Its name derives from an obscure English verb "to scrinch" which generally means to willfully compress a thing which is not very large into a smaller size. For instance "to scrinch your eyes". This is apt, because Scrinchy is a project where the goal is constantly to make it smaller but yet as feature-rich as possible.
Scrinchy is capable of serving HTML, JPG, GIF, TIFF, PNG, and various other file types, as well as running Perl, Python and (theoretically) PHP scripts externally and passing GET params and cookies to those scripts. At this stage, Scrinchy does not support POST but it will later.
Scrinchy also has some anti-hacker features, described in the README file. The more I use the server myself and observe all the hair-brained things attackers and infected computers do, the more amusement I find in squashing their pitiful efforts.
Enhancements:
- This release improves the internal stack-based interpretive language.

About Apache:
Apache HTTP Server is a free software/open source HTTP web server for Unix-like systems (BSD, Linux, and UNIX systems), Microsoft Windows, Novell NetWare and other platforms. Apache is notable for playing a key role in the initial growth of the World Wide Web, and continues to be the most popular web server in use, serving as the reference platform against which other web servers are designed and judged.
Apache features highly configurable error messages, DBMS-based authentication databases, and content negotiation. It is also supported by several graphical user interfaces (GUIs) which permit easier, more intuitive configuration of the server.
The Apache HTTP Server is developed and maintained by an open community of developers under the auspices of the Apache Software Foundation.

Papercut NNTP Server 0.9.13
Papercut NNTP Server is a NNTP server written in Python. more>>
Papercut NNTP Server is a news server written in 100% pure Python. It is intended to be
extensible to the point where people can develop their own plug-ins and by that integrate the NNTP protocol to their applications.
The server is compliant with most of the RFC0977 standards (when they make sense and are needed) and implements a lot of RFC1036 and RFC2980 extensions to the NNTP protocol. It was tested against Netscape News, Mozilla News and tin (under Solaris) and it works properly.
The original need for this server was to integrate my PHP related web site forums with an NNTP gateway interface, so people could list and read the messages posted to the forums on their favorite News reader.
At first it wasnt intended to support message posting, but it made sense to allow it after seeing how effective the tool was.
The concept of storage modules was created exactly for this. I would create a Python
class to handle the inner-workins of Phorum and MySQL and if I ever wanted to integrate the server with another type of software, I would just need to write a new storage module class.
Anyway, back to the technical praise. Papercut NNTP Server forking-based on UNIX platforms and should be reasonably fast (that means basically: its pretty fast, but dont try serving 1000 connection at a time).
The best thing about the application is that it is very simple to extend it.

BannerFilter 1.31
BannerFilter is a redirect script for the Squid proxy to block ad banners. more>>
This script blocks advertising banners on the Web. If you have a slow Internet connection, it will speed up your surfing, since the banners are not downloaded from the Internet at all.
Unlike most other similar solutions, BannerFilter does more than simply block advertising graphics. It also blocks advertising frames on a few sites, and automatically closes pop-up windows. A script can automatically download updated data files off the Web, and notify you when a new version is available.

Number::Latin 1.01
Number::Latin is a Perl module that can convert to/from the number system a,b,...z,aa,ab.... more>>
Number::Latin is a Perl module that can convert to/from the number system "a,b,...z,aa,ab..."
SYNOPSIS
use Number::Latin;
print join( , map int2latin($_), 1 .. 30), "n";
#
# Prints:
# a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q r s t u v w x y z aa ab ac ad
Some applications, notably the numbering of points in outlines, use a scheme that starts with the letter "a", goes to "z", and then starts over with "aa" thru "az", then "ba", and so on. (The W3C refers to this numbering system as "lower-latin"/"upper-latin" or "lower alpha"/"upper alpha", in discussions of HTML/CSS options for rendering of list elements (OL/LI).)
This module provides functions that deal with that numbering system, converting between it and integer values.
FUNCTIONS
This module exports four functions, int2latin, int2Latin, int2LATIN, and latin2int:
$latin = int2latin( INTEGER )
This returns the INTEGERth item in the sequence (a .. z, aa, ab, etc). For example, int2latin(1) is "a", int2latin(2) is "b", int2latin(26) is "z", int2latin(30) is "ad", and so for any nonzero integer.
$latin = int2Latin( INTEGER )
This is just like int2latin, except that the return value is has an initial capital. E.g., int2Latin(30) is "Ad".
$latin = int2LATIN( INTEGER )
This is just like int2latin, except that the return value is in all uppercase. E.g., int2LATIN(30) is "AD".
$latin = latin2int( INTEGER )
This converts back from latin number notation (regardless of capitalization!) to an integer value. E.g., latin2int("ad") is 30.
