Active Block I/O Scheduling System 13

Active Block I/O Scheduling System 13

ABISS is an extension for the Linux kernel that implements priorities for disk IO operations. more>>
Apart from these guaranteed real-time (RT) streams, we also included multiple priorities for best-effort (BE) disk traffic.
The system consists of a framework that is added to the kernel, including an elevator implementing multiple priorities, with a policy and coordination unit implemented in user space. This approach ensures separation between the kernel infrastructure (the framework) and the policies (e.g. admission control) in user space.
The ABISS extensions are controlled through ioctls applied to files accessed through the regular POSIX API. A small library with wrapper functions shaped after stdio (abiss_fopen(), abiss_fread(), abiss_fwrite(), etc.) is available for applications preferring a higher-level API.
ABISS is still experimental. It can currently provide high priority for reading from a FAT, VFAT, ext2, and ext3 file system. Writing is always best-effort.
Only a framework for resource control exists. Therefore, the current implementation can enforce that an application conforms to the requested service, but it cannot make bandwidth guarantees. Furthermore, there are various sources of sporadic but significant delays in the kernel, which can affect the service obtained by an application.
Enhancements:
- Updated to Linux 2.6.16.1.
- The compatibility layer has been moved from a global handler into each ioctl in each filesystem supported by ABISS.
- CFQ is now supported.
- Power management and overlap handling have been disabled for this version.

PHP Active Code Library (ACL) is a PHP 5 class used to store and call PHP files that are stored in a database.

The files are stored in a plain text field and not a binary field. PHP ACL also takes care of include/require calls.

If a file includes another file stored in the database, PHP ACL takes care of getting, generating, and including that file.

HyperLinked Text project is a Wiki-esque text file format and accompanying viewer. more>>
HyperLinked Text project is a Wiki-esque text file format and accompanying viewer.

HyperLinked Text (Hylt) is both a file format and a viewer for that format.

It uses (almost) flat text files to generate a Wiki-style database of hyperlinked pages, without either the complex markup of HTML or the esoteric database formats in which most Wikis store data.

It is geared towards users who desire a minimal interface between them and their data or like to store their data in formats which can be meaningfully stored in version control systems.

It was developed originally to match both of those goals, specifically for individuals writing fiction and wishing to track inter-character and inter-location relationships.

Active Objects is an implementation of the Active Object concept based on the boost::thread, boost::bind, and boost::function libraries.
The point of the library is to make taking advantage of multiprocessor machines as easy as possible. The library provides two types of functionality. The first is the ability to execute a function in a separate thread and automatically synchronize with the thread when the return value is needed.
The second is the ability to easily create a message cue for any existing class, and have that class process its messages asynchronously.
Enhancements:
- Minor code cleanup and code documentation updates.

Active port forwarder 0.8.3

Active port forwarder 0.8.3

Active port forwarder uses SSL for secure packet tunneling. more>>
Active port forwarder is a software tool for secure port forwarding. Active port forwarder uses SSL to increase security of communication between a server and a client. Originally, it was developed to forward data point to point.
However, the need for bypassing firewalls in order to connect to internally located computers influenced the further development of the project.
AF is dedicated for people, who dont have an external ip number and want to make some services available across the net.
Moreover, zlib is used to compress the transferred data.
Using one, permanent data/control channel with flow control / packet buffering provides good performance and reasonably small latency.
Running afserver does not require root priviledges, nor does it use threads or other processes.
Enhancements:
- The bug in the ip_listen function (visible on the systems without IPv6 support) has been fixed.

ZZEE Active SQL Backup 0.9.2

ZZEE Active SQL Backup 0.9.2

ZZEE Active SQL Backup can perform *incremental* backup of MySQL database. more>>
Since MySQL is the most popular SQL server that is used in conjunction with web sites, there was a need for incremental backup utility. ZZEE Active SQL Backup is designed for clients of web hosting companies, and can be useful to system administrators as well.
Main features:
- Can perform *incremental* backup of MySQL database
- Can perform full backup of MySQL database
- Can replicate database
- Can process SQL queries
- Can dump database structure
- Can suggest database changes needed to process incremental backup
- Can send data backed up by email
- Can transfer backed up data by FTP to other computer (if Net::FTP is installed)
- Can compress backed up data
Usage synopsis
Active SQL Backup can do incremental or full backups of MySQL database as often as needed. It is suitable both for the clients of web hosting companies who can not get access to MySQL update logs and for the host administrators. Backup syntax is:
shell> ./zmdb.pl -b
It stores backup files in BACKUP_DIR, specified in user_settings.txt, named like YYYY_MM_DD_hh_mm_ss.sql[.gz]. The backup files consist of series of SQL INSERT statements and may contain DELETE statements. The database scheme is stored in file database_name.create.sql. If gzip is available, then Active SQL Backup automatically uses it to compress stored data. The program can automatically send backed up files by email or upload to the other computer by FTP.
If the system fails, Active SQL Backup can restore the database. Restore syntax for incremental backups is:
shell> ./zmdb.pl -r
If you make full backups, restore syntax is the following:
shell> ./zmdb.pl -e < BACKUP_DIR/database_name.create.sql
shell> ./zmdb.pl -e < BACKUP_DIR/YYYY_MM_DD_hh_mm_ss.sql &
The first line is needed to restore database structure, and the second is the *most recent* data file. You may need to "gunzip" it before supplying to restore.
You can use the program to dump database structure
shell> ./zmdb.pl -s > structure_dump_file
or to process queries. The latter feature is useful if you need to process queries regularly, for example, to update membership status of the users of your online service. The syntax to execute SQL queries is:
shell> ./zmdb.pl -e < some_sql_file
Where format of some_sql_file is the same as with Mysql utility: SQL statements are separated by semicolon. Note that if you pass SELECT queries to Active SQL Backup, then no result will be returned.
Syntax summary is:
zmdb.pl [SINGLE_OPTION]
-a --advice suggest database modifications and tables_config.txt
-b --backup backup database structure and data
-e --execute execute SQL queries [from STDIN]
-h --help print this screen
-r --restore restore database structure and data
-s --structure dump database structure [to STDOUT]

active acoustic vibration control 0.0.1

active acoustic vibration control 0.0.1

active acoustic vibration control is a set of basic tools for monitoring and modulating audio noise. more>>
active acoustic vibration control tool is a set of basic tools for monitoring and modulating audio noise.

The tools aim toward a set of codes and algorithms for monitoring noise signal and modulation and reducing them using active noise control priciples.

Active noise control and soundproofing is a relativly recent development (first researched around 30 years ago), and has been in constant development for many and varied situations and applications.

The basic concept of active noise control is the aplication of equal and opposite force to cancel out vibration.

The project attempts to provide a starting point and library for experimentation into various methods of digital signal processing for active noise reduction and soundproofing.

Noise cancellation has been used in many environments currently active control is best used in constant vibrations with lower frequencys.

The principle is of controlling the noise level by adding an equal and opposite sound to the noise in the environment. The basic principle may be simple but the actual effectivness depends on many environmental factors.

Generally simplistic out of phase sound wave is used which works to some extent and requires little processing (a simple XOR with -1) this will tend to leave a large number of artifacts as the amplitude of higher frequency components (above i->o delay time) rises.

i->o processing delay
e transducer efficiency
p sound propagation characteristics
r reflections

The project aims to provide a framework for many dsp architectures, dac/adc chips, transducers and monitors.

Create tools for acoustic calibration and data logging hardware
To simplify implementation of active noise and vibration control systems.
To provide an open source standard for use within the industry and education.
To encourage hardware producers to distribute standard interface descriptions for their hardware
Enable low cost development of systems using COTS consumer hardware for noise and vibration control.

Genoa Active Message MAchine 13-July-2007

Genoa Active Message MAchine 13-July-2007

Genoa Active Message MAchine is a low-latency, high-throughput driver wrapper for the Linux kernel. more>>
Genoa Active Message MAchine is a low-latency, high-throughput driver wrapper for the Linux kernel, using Active Ports (a version of Active Messages).
Genoa Active Message MAchine runs parallel to the IP stack and is designed for LANs only.
Main features:
- A low latency, high throughput communication system for clusters of PCs
- Supports both single and dual CPU processing nodes (Intel IA-32 or x86_64)
- Runs on Gigabit Ethernet
- SPMD parallel processing with message passing
- Can run IP traffic when not in use
- Good programmability thanks to fairly high abstraction level
- Reliable thanks to mechanisms for retransmission of missing packets
- Implemented as a network device driver for Linux 2.6, and released under GNU GPL
Network Of Workstations (NOWs) and clusters of PCs interconnected by modern, industry-standard LAN fabrics (Gigabit Ethernet, Myrinet, SCI) and running the Linux operating system, have became an attractive and cost-effective architecture for parallel and distributed applications. The usual drawback of a standard PC cluster is the poor performance of the support to inter-process communication over the interconnect. Current implementations of industry-standard communication primitives, APIs, and protocols, usually show high communication latencies and low communication throughput.
We have developed a system for inter-process communication, called the Genoa Active Message MAchine (GAMMA). GAMMA runs on Linux clusters of PCs with Intel IA-32 processors (Intel Pentium, AMD K6, and superior models), or x86_64 processors (AMD Athlon64, AMD Opteron, Intel EMT-64), networked by a Gigabit Ethernet.
The core of GAMMA is a custom Linux network device driver, which operates the Network Interface Card (NIC). The GAMMA driver delivers low latency, high throughput communication services based on Active Ports, a mechanism derived from Active Messages. Both point-to-point and broadcast communications are provided. Broadcast communication exploits the Ethernet broadcast directly.
The GAMMA driver is able to manage standard IP traffic as long as no parallel job is running. Therefore, all IP services are up and running whenever the cluster is not in use by any parallel job.
The communication mechanisms implemented in the GAMMA driver are made available to application writers through the GAMMA user library. The GAMMA library provides support to application launch, process grouping, point-to-point/broadcast communications based on the Active Ports mechanisms, and some collective routines (barrier synchronization, and broadcast).
GAMMA provides two levels of QoS. The lower one, corresponding to the fastest communications, is a best-effort service. With this service, network congestion and ``hot spots may cause the receiver NIC or even the LAN switch to loose packets by overrun. The other QoS level provides flow-controlled communication, ensuring reliability up to hardware faults, at a negligible performance penalty.
Installing the GAMMA driver requires only two small and marginal patches to the original Linux kernel. The Linux kernel extended by the GAMMA driver must be installed on each PC in the cluster.
A porting of MPI atop GAMMA is available, called MPI/GAMMA.
