GiNaC is an iterated and recursive acronym for GiNaC is Not a CAS, where CAS stands for Computer Algebra System. It is designed to allow the creation of integrated systems that embed symbolic manipulations together with more established areas of computer science (like computation- intense numeric applications, graphical interfaces, etc.) under one roof. It is distributed under the terms and conditions of the GNU general public license (GPL).
The project has been specifically developed to become a replacement engine for xloops which is up to now powered by the Maple CAS. However, it is not restricted to high energy physics applications. Its design is revolutionary in a sense that contrary to other CAS it does not try to provide extensive algebraic capabilities and a simple programming language but instead accepts a given language (C++) and extends it by a set of algebraic capabilities.
Enhancements:
- Bugs in fderivative::match_same_type(), expairseq::match(), expand_dummy_sum(), and expairseq::map() have been fixed, and the C source output has been slightly improved.
- Problems when compiling with GCC 4.2 have been resolved.

The Persistence of Vision Ray-Tracer creates three-dimensional, photo-realistic images using a rendering technique called ray-tracing. It reads in a text file containing information describing the objects and lighting in a scene and generates an image of that scene from the view point of a camera also described in the text file.
The Persistence of Vision Ray-Tracer(tm) was developed from DKBTrace 2.12 (written by David K. Buck and Aaron A. Collins) by a bunch of people (called the POV-Team?) in their spare time. The headquarters of the POV-Team is on the internet (see "Where to Find POV-Ray Files" for more details).
The POV-Ray package includes detailed instructions on using the ray-tracer and creating scenes. Many stunning scenes are included with POV-Ray so you can start creating images immediately when you get the package. These scenes can be modified so you do not have to start from scratch.
In addition to the pre-defined scenes, a large library of pre-defined shapes and materials is provided. You can include these shapes and materials in your own scenes by just including the library file name at the top of your scene file, and by using the shape or material name in your scene.
Ray-tracing is not a fast process by any means, but it produces very high quality images with realistic reflections, shading, perspective and other effects.
Ray-tracing is a rendering technique that calculates an image of a scene by simulating the way rays of light travel in the real world. However it does its job backwards. In the real world, rays of light are emitted from a light source and illuminate objects. The light reflects off of the objects or passes through transparent objects. This reflected light hits our eyes or perhaps a camera lens. Because the vast majority of rays never hit an observer, it would take forever to trace a scene.
Ray-tracing programs like POV-Ray start with their simulated camera and trace rays backwards out into the scene. The user specifies the location of the camera, light sources, and objects as well as the surface texture properties of objects, their interiors (if transparent) and any atmospheric media such as fog, haze, or fire.
For every pixel in the final image one or more viewing rays are shot from the camera, into the scene to see if it intersects with any of the objects in the scene. These "viewing rays" originate from the viewer, represented by the camera, and pass through the viewing window (representing the final image).
Every time an object is hit, the color of the surface at that point is calculated. For this purpose rays are sent backwards to each light source to determine the amount of light coming from the source. These "shadow rays" are tested to tell whether the surface point lies in shadow or not. If the surface is reflective or transparent new rays are set up and traced in order to determine the contribution of the reflected and refracted light to the final surface color.
Special features like inter-diffuse reflection (radiosity), atmospheric effects and area lights make it necessary to shoot a lot of additional rays into the scene for every pixel.

It provides transparent forwarding of stdin, stdout, stderr, and signals to and from remote processes, provides local environment propagation, and is designed to be robust and to scale to systems over 1000 nodes. Internally, GEXEC operates by building an n-ary tree of TCP sockets and threads between gexec daemons and propagating control information up and down the tree. By using hierarchical control, GEXEC distributes both the work and resource usage associated with massive amounts of parallelism across multiple nodes, thereby eliminating problems associated with single node resource limits (e.g., limits on the number of file descriptors on front-end nodes). The initial release of the software is made of a daemon, a client program, and a library that provides programmatic interface to the GEXEC system.

bgrab is an application used to download binary attachments from newsgroups.
The purpose of this program is to automate the downloading of binary attachments from UseNet Newsgroups. Given a group name, this program will connect to a news server, read all messages in that group and extract any binary attachments included in any of those messages (including multipart attachments). This program does not require any keyboard interaction and could be fairly easily scheduled to run from crond.
To compile this program, you need to be on a system that uses the GNU C++ Compiler (or that has some other ANSI C++ compliant compiler linked to run as the gcc executable). You also need to have either curses or ncurses installed.
Makefiles are included for Linux and Solaris systems. The attached configure script does nothing more than try to figure out if youre running one of these two OSes and create a link from one of them to Makefile if you are. The Linux makefile assumes you have ncurses installed, the Solaris that you have curses itself.
If some of this isnt true (i.e. if youre running some other variant of UNIX or if your curses is called something different), youre on your own to compile.
Otherwise:

RipIT is used to create MPEG-1 Layer 3 (mp3), Flac (flac) or Ogg Vorbis (ogg) audio files from an audio CD and from version 3.4 also faac (m4a). RipIT is a console based front-end (no fancy GUI here), written in perl, for these excellent programs:
- dagrab, cdparanoia or cdda2wav (tosha and cdd are also supported) for ripping the audio CD tracks (I dont know if dagrab is still up to date..., but its COOL!)
- Lame, OggVorbis, Flac or Faac for encoding the wav files to mp3, ogg, flac or m4a (find some info and links)
- CDDB_get (perl module) for CDDB retrieval (info and links).
