The eLearning XHTML editor (eXe) is a Web-based authoring environment designed to assist teachers and academics in the design. more>>
The eLearning XHTML editor (eXe) is a web-based authoring environment designed to assist teachers and academics in the design, development and publishing of web-based learning and teaching materials without the need to become proficient in HTML, XML or complicated web-publishing applications.
The Web is a revolutionary educational tool because it presents teachers and learners with a technology that simultaneously provides something to talk about (content) and the means to hold the conversation (interaction).
Unfortunately, the power of this hypertext medium is constrained in educational settings because the vast majority of teachers and academics do not have the technical skills to build their own web pages, and must therefore rely on the availability of web developers to generate professional looking online content.
Version restrictions:
- Traditionally web-authoring software entails a steep learning curve; it is not intuitive and the applications were not designed for publishing learning content. Consequently teachers and academics have not adopted these technologies for publishing online learning content. eXe aims to provide an intuitive, easy-to-use tool that will enable teachers to publish professional web pages for learning;
- Currently, learning management systems do not offer sophisticated authoring tools for web content (when compared to the capabilities of web-authoring software or the skills of an experienced web developer). eXe will develop a tool that provides professional web-publishing capabilities that can be easily referenced or imported by standards compliant learning management systems;
- Most content management and learning management systems utilize a centralized web server model thus requiring connectivity for authoring. This is limiting for authors with low bandwidth connectivity or no connectivity at all. eXe will be developed as an offline authoring tool without the requirement for connectivity.
- Many content management and learning management systems do not provide an intuitive wysiwyg environment where authors can see what their content will look like in a browser when published, especially when working offline. eXe will mimic wysiwig functionality enabling users to see what the content will look like when published online.
Enhancements:
- Recent versions of eXe have added the ability to embed images and media (audio and video files) into the iDevice template structure.
- Images and media can be used not only in the main field of each iDevice, but in the subfields like "Feedback" as well.
- There have been many bugfixes over the past few months.
- RPMs for Fedora (both Fedora Core 6 and Fedora 7) are being built again.

RubyScript2Exe 0.5.3

RubyScript2Exe 0.5.3

RubyScript2Exe transforms your Ruby script into a standalone, compressed Windows, Linux or Mac OS X (Darwin) executable. more>>
RubyScript2Exe transforms your Ruby script into a standalone, compressed Windows, Linux or Mac OS X (Darwin) executable.

You can look at it as a "compiler". Not in the sense of a source-code-to-byte-code compiler, but as a "collector", for it collects all necessary files to run your script on an other machine: the Ruby script, the Ruby interpreter and the Ruby runtime library (stripped down for this script). Anyway, the result is the same: a standalone executable (application.exe). And thats what we want!

Because of the gathering of files from your own Ruby installation, RubyScript2Exe creates an executable for the platform its being run on. No cross compile.

And when I say Windows, I mean both Windows (RubyInstaller, MinGW and MSWin32) and Cygwin. But the generated exe under Cygwin is very, very big, because its exes are very big (static?) and it includes cygwin1.dll, so it can run on machines without Cygwin.

There is one more advantage: Because there might be some incompatibilities between the different Ruby versions, you have to test your script with every single version. Unless you distribute your version of Ruby with your script...

If you like RubyScript2Exe, you might want to read Distributing Ruby Applications. Its about how I build, pack and distribute my Ruby applications. Theory and practice.

CerbeRun 0.2.1

CerbeRun 0.2.1

CerbeRun is a software able to parse .run files, then to execute them. more>>
CerbeRun is a software able to parse .run files, then to execute them. CerbeRun is designed to make easier the use of Linux desktop computers for normal user, that is not forced to switch to root user in order to execute new applications. The main concept on which CerbeRun and the .run format are based is:

download
double-click
execution and enjoying

All is performed comfortably and with user grants only . Users from other systems are accustomed to download software and save it on supports, to be executed later or to be shared with friends. At present, it is not so easy (some times impossible) to save & distribute packages with .DEB or .RPM formats or other user-side formats (klik, 0install, packages), as in Mac or Windows systems.

CerbeRun and .run format, instead, merge the advantages of two above mentioned systems, because Windows .exe are single files to be executed, while Macintosh .app files can be installed and executed after a dragndrop, without a real installation step.

wxDialer 0.2.1

wxDialer 0.2.1

wxDialer allows you to make and recieve phone calls on your modem. more>>
wxDialer is a simple and easy to use dialer program which allowes to make and receive calls on your modem. This program is based on win9x dialer.exe application.
A microphone is required, and it is suggested that you also have
headphones instead of using your speakers to prevent any nasty feedback. A
telephone headset, naturally, is best for this.
This is program is not designed for voice-over-IP (VoIP) or to dial to ISDN
modems. It dials out using your every day dialup modem, and makes your
computer one big handset.
To run wxDialer, its simply a case of using the appropiate command
(ie: python /home/aaron/python/wxDialer/wxDialer.py) without any arguments. It
doesnt matter if you specify arguments, they are ignored (for now ;)
wxDialer stores configuration information in the dir $HOME/.wxDialer - if it
doesnt exist, it is created along with the config file containing default
values.
Enhancements:
- Fixed a bug where the modem may fail to initialize properly, causing it not to dial out.

Spectalum rev31

Spectalum rev31

Spectalum project is an engine for the CRPG Eye of the Beholder II. more>>
Spectalum project is an engine for the CRPG Eye of the Beholder II.

Spectalum is a reverse engineered Open Source game engine for the 1991 CRPG Eye of the Beholder II: The Legend of Darkmoon originally developed by Westwood Associates.

Like with most similar projects, the original game data has to be obtained seperately to play the game.

Why..?

Because I loved this game so much - I played it a long long time ago on my Amiga 500 and later on my first PC.

Another point is my interest in classic gaming technologies. I think this Dungeon-Master style is very interesting from a gamers - and a programmers view. You can create fascinating worlds with very low system resources.

How to play

Copy your original game datafiles (ENGLISH version only) into the "original" game folder. Now start the game with the remake-binary (e.g. spectalum.exe).

Eye of the Beholder - the Legend of Darkmoon is a classic role playing game from the early 90s. You move through a static tile-based 3D environment solving puzzles and hunting monsters.

What do I need to play this remake?

My ambition is to create a system-independent 100% remake of the great original. That means old-school 320x200 role playing gameplay. By using the SDL multimedia library and general C++ coding standards the game will run on any libSDL supported platform.

settevion 1.4.1

settevion is a program that allows you to edit the channels in your Skymaster DXL 9400 Satellite Receiver. more>>
settevion is a program that allows you to edit the channels in your Skymaster DXL 9400 Satellite Receiver.
This receiver was sold under the name Tevion FTA 203 by Aldi. Note that the current version does not allow writing radio channels into the receiver. Also note: This program makes use of undocumented behaviour. USE IT AT YOUR OWN RISK. There is no guarantee, even not against possible damage to your equipment. The program is free for personal, non-commercial use. Commercial use and copying (even at no cost) requires written permission. There are only german instructions provided, but Id not expect many problems for non-german speaking users since the programs dialog language is english.
Download settevion-x.x.x.tar.gz for Linux or settevion-win-x.x.x.zip for Windows. See the "Download" section below. For Linux, you must have Python installed (at least version 2.2) and Tkinter, which might be in a separate package. They are part of your distribution. Unpack the .tar.gz and do a "make install". The Windows version comes with its Python interpreter integrated into settevion.exe. Just unpack the zip file. For both versions, connect the receiver with a null modem cable and start settevion. Choose "Edit->Preferences" to select your serial device. Then choose "Receiver->Read data from receiver". This should be enough to make this run.
Enhancements:
- settevion.py: getDBPRINT: added code to read in SER data entry by entry since firmware version 2.12 doesnt dump the SER data base any more. satIO.read() changed to ignore asynchronous error messages ("trashlog") if they are one a line of their own. Warning message added if Python is called with -O and one of the debugging (-v) command line options is set. Version 1.4.1.

FreeFont 20060126

FreeFont 20060126

FreeFont project aims to provide a set of free outline fonts. more>>
FreeFont project aims to provide a set of free outline (PostScript Type0, TrueType, OpenType...) fonts covering the ISO 10646/Unicode UCS (Universal Character Set).
Why do we need free outline UCS fonts?
A large number of free software users switched from free X11 bitmapped fonts to proprietary Microsoft Truetype fonts, as a) they used to be freely downloaded from Microsoft Typography page, b) they contain a more or less decent subset of the ISO 10646 UCS (Universal Character Set), c) they are high-quality, well hinted scalable Truetype fonts, and d) Freetype, a free high-quality Truetype font renderer is available and has been integrated into the latest release of XFree86, the free X11 server.
Building a dependence on non-free software, even a niche one like fonts, is dangerous. Microsoft Truetype core fonts were never free, they were just costless. Citing the TrueType core fonts for the Web FAQ: You may only redistribute the fonts in their original form (.exe or .sit.hqx) and with their original file name from your Web site or intranet site. You must not supply the fonts, or any derivative fonts based on them, in any form that adds value to commercial products, such as CD-ROM or disk based multimedia programs, application software or utilities. As of August 2002, however, the fonts are not anymore available on the Web, which makes the situation clearer.
Dont there exist any free high-quality outline fonts? Yes, they do. URW++, a German digital typefoundry, released their own version of the 35 Postscript Type 1 core fonts under GPL as their donation to the Ghostscript project. The Wadalab Kanji comittee has produced Type 1 font files with thousands of filigree Japanese glyphs. Yannis Haralambous has drawn beautiful glyphs for the Omega typesetting system. And so on. Scattered around the internet there are numerous other free resources for other national scripts, many of them aiming to be a suitable match for Latin fonts like Times or Helvetica.
Free UCS outline fonts will cover the following character sets:
- ISO 8859 parts 1-15
- CEN MES-3 European Unicode Subset
- IBM/Microsoft code pages 437, 850, 852, 1250, 1252 and more
- Microsoft/Adobe Windows Glyph List 4 (WGL4)
- KOI8-R and KOI8-U
- DEC VT100 graphics symbols
- International Phonetic Alphabet
- Arabic, Hebrew, Armenian, Georgian, Ethiopian, Thai and Lao alphabets, including Arabic presentation forms A/B
- Japanese Katakana and Hiragana
- mathematical symbols, including the whole TeX repertoire of symbols
- APL symbols etc.

Mono-Readline 0.0.1

Mono-Readline 0.0.1

Mono-Readline is a simple little assembly for .Net (specifically Mono) that provides support for GNU Readline. more>>
Mono-Readline is a simple little assembly for .Net (specifically Mono) that provides support for GNU Readline support within Mono applications.

Mono-Readline project is based on the code of Martin Baulig in the Mono debugger. I just took it and made it all nice and autoconf/automake enabled.

Its pretty straight forward, but here is a short sample program:

using Mono.ReadLine;
using System;
using System.Reflection;

public class Test {

public static void Main(string[] args) {
GnuReadLine readline = new GnuReadLine();
Console.WriteLine("Monkeys!");

string the_prompt = "This is a test: ";
string result;
while (true) {
result = readline.ReadLine(the_prompt);
if (result != null) {
readline.AddHistory(result);
} else {
break;
}
}
}
}

You should be able to compile this with mcs -r:mono.readline test.cs and get a little executable program that keeps going until you hit CTRL-D. There is lots of other fun you could do such as setting up continuation prompts and what not. Basically, most of this is ripped from Martins code in the mono debugger.

But wait, odds are youre going to get some funky error saying it cant find the package or something like that. If thats the case, make sure you have MONO_PATH="/usr/local/lib" set before running the program and compiling. For example to compile run:

MONO_PATH="/usr/local/lib" mcs -r:mono.readline test.cs

And then to run type:

MONO_PATH="/usr/local/lib" mono test.exe

Im not a real Mono pro, but my hope is that this could possibly help someone else out. Im thinking that in the future I may also include a patch for IronPython.

As always, if you have comments or patches, please let me know.

ppsei 0.1

ppsei is a simple command line program, which tries to extract images from Microsoft PowerPoint documents. more>>
ppsei short from PPS Extract Images is a simple command line program, which tries to extract images from Microsoft PowerPoint documents (PPS/PPT).

Because i get a lot of mails with attached PPS/PPT in, containing some nice images (about universe, about pretty girls, etc). The sender people are using this file format as an image-container, or image-encapsulator.

They could use tar/zip/..., but somehow PPS is the general. On *nix systems only resource-consume application can handle this file formats (openoffice, wine + win.exe), so i decided to write this tool.

Currently only JPEG and PNG files can be extracted. Because the PPS file format is not so well-documented as the gnumeric :-), there is no guarantee, that all images will be grabbed correctly. But the experience is, that it works!

As i said, this is a command line program: you can call it from SHELL (or from favorite email software). It takes only the PPS file(s) as argument, and will extract all detected images to the current directory:

$ ppsei universe.pps beauty-islands.ppt
...
$ gqview (start here some image viewer application, to see the result)
